I grabbed two of These since ive had great experiences with G.Skill in the past and i wanted ones with low profile heat-spreaders so i know they wont get in the way of any large cpu Heatsink i may use in a future build.

Thanks, I ordered one set last night and am seriously considering ordering a second.

And guys, yeah, I know that my comment about buying a faster grade of RAM to avoid having to overclock it when overclocking my CPU is probably an outdated statement; it is true of my current S775 setup and I wasn't 100% sure if it applied to SB or not.

....the k chips have unlocked memory multipler.

...I thought I remember reading the non-K chips basically don't overclock more than a 100mhz or so. Probably due to the motherboard chipset more than anything...but if you want to overclock and you're trying to decide whether you should buy more expensive memory and possibly a tougher (also likely more expensive) motherboard to do so, you may as well just dig up the extra $15 for the K instead because you aren't going to save any money doing it the old fashioned way and it sounds like it'll be a lot more trouble IMO.

If you have an old platform though I can see why you'd want the upper headroom.

Most decent motherboards for i7's allow you to adjust the memory multiplier and run the RAM asyncronously from the CPU speed. memory badnwidth is generally not a limiting factor for most users. If it is, they should be using a triple-channel (or better) system and then you have even more badnwidth.

With the low voltage on these sticks, I wouldn't doubt you could potentially push these to 1600 or so with 1.6v or 1.65v and still be OK. Generally though, most users are fine with any double-channel systems at speeds >1200mhz. Memory just isn't a huge bottleneck these days for most general tasks.

I'm using a DDR2 am2+ system right now, but picked up the Corsair 8gb kit for 56AR/AC. Just keep some extra ddr3s for my next build. For those who is going with PNY, beware their lifetime warranty is the lifetime of the product which isn't too long. I personally like Corsair even if it's more expensive since their rebates are always good and their lifetime is pretty much lifetime.

What's considered the best bang for the buck, regarding DDR3 memory?

Anyone purchased Kinston Value RAM lately? Just got an 8GB set (2x 4GB sticks) and was surprised to find that they're low-profile sticks like this:

I like this form factor and wish that my HyperX modules were this short.

They've had low profile RAM for a while now. I have some 2x2GB DDR2 modules from several years back that look like those in your pic.
