Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 750GB, 16MB Cache-$99.99 with code EMCAGBHBF

Samsung Spinpoint F1 750GB, 32MB Cache-$99.99 with code EMCAGBHBG

Both deals are hot, but the Samsung is especially good considering I got a WD6400AAKS for $99.99 just two weeks ago and this is providing 110GB more and double the cache for the same price.

Dang, you beat me to posting, LOL.

Note that these don't have free shipping, so around $108 shipped. Sale prices have been hovering just over this for a while, so I'd say this is just the start of close to "regular" pricing.

$114 shipped 5/11/08
$110 shipped 5/13/08
$100 plus shipping ($7?) 5/14/08

Bought the Samsung at my local Fry's for $110 Sunday, just as a point of reference.

The Seagates run a tad warm (since it's 4 platters). Nothing to worry about too much but if you have more than two drives in the system with little or no air flow, it's something to worry about. Also Seagate drives (from what I am running, which are 6x 320GB 7200.10) tend to have sharp seek noise. I'd much suck it up and lose 2 years of the warranty for a faster, quieter drive.

I've heard that the 7200.10 series were noisy in general. Lots of people seem to complain about how hot they run too.

Unfortunately as always, these hard drive sales are only good for one purchase. Which makes it hard for me to populate a 4-drive NAS It's actually cheaper for me to buy four of the Samsungs with 2-day shipping form Zipzoomfly.

I own the Samsung F1 750gb, fast hard drive, but some older sata controllers have issues with it. For example, I cannot use nVidia's SATA / IDE drivers and expect my system to boot. In addition, I cannot reset my computer or it will hang during the POST. Power off and back on works fine, odd issue. I think it is mainly isolated to nForce chipsets, google for more info. I have an nForce3 Ultra btw.

I just bought one of the Seagates last week from the egg' for $109 and it died the same night. My replacement is coming this Thursday, so I'll report back if it's another bad one. I had it running for a few hours transferring files and it didn't seem all that warm.

I would have went one these 750GB drives, but they are probably 250GB per platter at best (the 7200.10 is probably less). I went ahead with the WD6400AAKS to keep the platter count low and the platter density higher.
For just raw storage space, then these drives can't be beat at these prices.

I believe the Samsung F1 uses higher density platter - same ones in their 1GB drive that only uses 3 platters.

This is cold. $7.99 shipping makes it $107. ZipZoom fly has been selling those for $109 for 2 months now. NewEgg sucks as they have higher prices than most places nowadays.

The fix is to uninstall the nVidia SATA / IDE drivers before ghosting the image over

Seems to work fine so far...

I was on the fence about this but I just ordered 1. Seems to be the best performer though for that price. I still have older raptors, I just need space and I didn't feel like shelling out for the Hitachi 7k1000's.

Yep, bought mine at ZZF for 119 shipped. A pretty darn good deal, even today. The Samsungs run nice and cool and quiet. While some seem to get bum drives, I wonder how much of that is bad motherboards/OC/drivers?

Just bought the WD 640GB for $95 shipped. Almost bit on this one but realized I would've ended up with a bill for around $115 after tax/shipping costs. Still not bad though.

Does anyone have a link to Samsung site to check the warranty? I tried to find it on their website but couldn't. Considering it is an OEM drive, does it have any kind of warranty beyond Newegg's 30 days?

This page gives me an error. This page states:
1.Drives manufactured from May, 2007 and onwards, Customer need to contact respective retailers/ distributors for warranty support.

Samsung is at higher densities with 334gb per platter vs Western Digitals 320gb.

Not really, both drives are neck and neck for performance.

More platters really isn't a big deal.

ZZF also has the "bonus" of the foam drive pouch+ air pouches, compared to newegg's maybe-good, maybe-bad (depending on which warehouse packed it), packing material.

I called Samsung up for some other drives I have any they were just like Seagate or WD for warranty. It's based on manufacture date.
