The million dollar question is if these are 7k1000.b or k71000.c. People at egg seem to have received .c's I figure?

Not a mail in fan. Give me my money or don't, I'm not playing some stupid game to get my money back.

and it is a rebate debit card. not a check. That makes it harder to cash and use.
The rebate debit card is a new trend that is designed to reduce the rebates paid out.

I have (had) 2 of these drives.
For a main machine these might not be a bad deal. But for those wanting to put this in a htpc I would recommend against it for 3 reasons.

#1. They are a loud and noisy drive.
#2. They run very hot, almost to the point of needing a fan on them.
#3. Did I mention these things are loud?

During the quiet parts of the movie you can hear the drive clicking. Defrag this bad boy with Defraggle and it sounds like an electric chain saw.

Learned my lesson. I ended up giving both my drives to my kids (who no longer live at home) just so I could replace them.

I did talk to a guy from tech support ( a very indian sounding guy named "albert") who told me that loud sound it makes during movies and chain saw sound during defrag is the sound of normal operation. There is nothing wrong with the drive, it should sound like that.

Didn't one of the egg reviews state you can mitigate that by altering the AAM mode?

As far as I know, Hitachi only makes 2TB drives in a 5 platter version. That is why they're hot and noisy.

As for Visa debit rebate cards, I really don't know why people keep complaining about them. I have yet to run into a problem either knocking off the rebate balance from my bill before paying or depositing the full balance into my bank account. Neither process requires a fee.

tempting, but if these run hot, they wouldn't be good for an external enclosure, which is what I want one for.

I tried my luck at it once, and the clerk at the bank told me you need to have the pin # to access the card, as it functions much like a debit card. Strangely, I didn't need any pin # to use it at local walmart. They let you make partial payment with the rebate card, which is the saving grace of it.

Is there a reliable drive over 1tb?
I need a 2tb drive, but am gun-shy after multiple failed Seabait 1.5tb's.

I'm thinking this is the drive I just got off the FS/FT forums. If it is, it seems to be rather noisy (although my drive is also DoA and could be part of the reason for the noise).

I'm going to be avoiding buying more Hitachi drives. Had a Deathstar, and thought I'd give em another shot. Seems they might still suck.

Hitachi drives are fine, in fact it's what we sell at our shop and we go through over a dozen/week. Seagates on the other hand.....nothing but problems for us.

Great deal, thanks OP!

I got one of these giant SOBs... it is kinda loud, but hang it in a 5.25 bay with some elastic cut from the waistband of your old, streaked undies and it'll quiet down quite a bit!

Or put the HTPC in another room and use a SageTV HD extender. Option B: use a $6, 15' HDMI cord and a wireless keyboard with the little trackball built in.

My 4 port multiplier has a built in fan and eSATA connectivity. That's 4 cooled SATA drives with one eSATA cable. Have 2 1TB drives so far. Waiting until the 2TB drops below the $100 price point...

I need the space, it's a good price, but I'm scared. The last 2TB (Seabait) I installed in a friend's machine died in only 5 days. Someone please hold me. :'(

Everywhere I read about the best 2TB consumer drives, these seem to come out on top. They're the only consumer grade 2TB drives that run reliably in RAID. I'm considering jumping on 8 of these in the near future for a RAID6.
