Saw an ad in the back in this month's issue. I think it means they can afford Ziffy Davis's ad rates so that's a good sign right?

Hehe not sure if its NE's first time or not, but that's how Mail Order business was done pre-Internet days

I remember shopping for deals in the back of those mags, which were like pc bibles b/c you couldn't just type in urls to find the info you needed.

Newegg also has an ad at page 90 with Maximum PC - Feb 2003 issue.
Online Orders only. Newegg.com does not accept phone, fax, or email oders. Please only order online at www.newegg.com/max
My favorite site when I order refurb cases and motherboards. No tax and sometimes free Fedex shipping.

I too saw Newegg's ad in PC World, and was perplexed by the price for a P4-2.4B: $159 retail. That's fully $41 less than the web price. Anyone know what gives here? How would one get that price, or what it simply a misprint?

My bad, it is $159 in PC World also.

MaximumPC lists that CPU at $159. Their website still lists it at $194. The ad is not a typo however.

This is done intentionally by their marketing people to exponentially increase the number of hits on their website. It's a common "hook" used in advertising, and of course is completely "deniable." Heretofore the gimmick was used primarily by less respectable outfits.

I'm surprised that NewEgg stooped to this though. I've always been 110% satisfied with all aspects of their service.
They'll still be getting my next order, but I'd caution them against using this technique too often.

"They'll still be getting my next order" -- Looks like it worked for them in my case!!

Hmmm, oh well.

FWIW I sent an email off to Newegg this am inquiring into why there's a discrepancy in the price, between the ad and their website. Interesting to see if I get a reply.

Maybe if we can email/fax them a copy of the magazine ad they will honor their lowball price.

Newegg.com seems to be the most popular PC part place to buy from. Dont have a single complaint with them. They are the best and deserve to be making enough money to fund lots of ads. Shoot I see banners for them more than ever!

The ad has a disclaimer on the bottom of the page in small letters.

Price, specification, and terms are subject to change without notice. Picture may vary from actual product. Newegg.com is not responsible for errors in typography and or photography. 30 days money back guarantee does not include opened software, parts, processor, or special order merchandize. Original shipping and handling fee along with return shipping charge are non-refundable. All returns are subject to a 15% restocking fee. Newegg.com does not accept return after 30 days. All brands and products are trademarks of their respecitive holders. Newegg.com uses Fedex Saver as standard shipping. Other rates, which are required for AK, HI, PR and APO/FPO wii be higher.

So they could just claim that the $159 is a typo and not honor the ad price. :disgust:

As I indicated I sent an email to Newegg inquiring into the price the listed for a 2.4GHz 533MHz P4. Here's the response I received today:

Thank you for contacting us,

This is not a Typo in the advertisement. This is an ad for the March issue of the Magazine's we have placed this ad in and as such we projected prices for March. These prices will become valid beginning the month of March. This as you have noted is the first month that Newegg.com has placed an advertisement in a magazine and as such we are still learning how to best judge advertisement prices due to the lead-time that they have. In the future the ad's will be more inline with when the Magazine is actually received in the hands of its subscribers as compared to the month listed on the front.

If there is anything else, please let us know.

It will be interesting to see if the 2.4 price is actually $159 as we head into March. Time will tell.

It takes at least a few months to get these ads in, so these prices were decided long ago....it's VERY hard to predict prices as we all know.

Then this would be a nice price.

Thinking of this for my next project.

GIGABYTE GA-8PE667Ultra + P4 2.4GHz 533MHZ (Northwood) OC'd to 3 GHz. Then probably a ATI 9700 Pro to get 3DMark2001SE to at least 20000.

Yes, as someone already stated, these ads aren't submitted and put into the magazine a day later. It takes a lot of time and price prediction for these mag ads. It is NOT a bait and switch tactic.

Wow. They responded. That is cool. Kudos to Newegg, as I too have been really pleased with their customer service, other online stores could learn from their example. Plus they have a ton of stuff.
