Refurbbed CPU's just means they took what they had as returns and are selling them. They were returned for various reasons, and the ones that work they can just resell. I'm sure the returns are for reasons like, uhh it doesn't fit my intel motherboard, what can I do? Uhh, it wont fit my socket 7 mobo what can I do? Uhh, you mean I need a 300watt power supply for that? I can't get the heatsink on, it's too hard. What, prices dropped on AMD and I can get this $5 cheaper from another internet store? Ok I'll spend $7 and return it to newegg. Reasons like that. Most refurbed stuff sold anywhere is stuff that was returned for various reasons, and normally have minor blemishes.

just wondering...

How do you know the chips weren't returned because they don't overclock?

Its true that some chips do overclock better to others...but its not like some only work at stock speed and some overclock 250+mhz

These are not new and have an unknown past. I guess that we just know somebody labeled them defective at one time.

But help me with the prices. When I compare these prices with pricewatch, I don't see the heat of this deal. Maybe it is the shipping?

speed/newegg/pricewatch
Athlons
1.0-200/62/72
1.0-266/62/72
1.2-266/71/81
1500+/89/99
1900+/165/185
2000+/225/242

Duron
<none listed right now>

Athlon MP
1600/148/158

I was hoping for some of those $4/cpu kind of deals

boa,
$10-$20 savings when you take in account the free shipping is a pretty good deal. Plus, it's newegg.com. A great company with a great track record is worth a lot!

Those shipping for pricewatch sites are lik 10$+ , and you get it free from newegg. Newegg is a much more reliable company that most, and RMA things quite well.

have faith in newegg...if it does ASII on the bridges then you'll have to exchange it for another oem processor, possibly a new one.

You guys put too much faith in Newegg. Based on my experience with their "refurbished" motherboards, their definition of refurb is returned. They don't test, or even examine them. They just resell the crap they get back from RMA regardless of condition or state. It's a great business proposition for them. They push the "refurbishing" part on to their customers, since they don't have to spend the time and money testing the returns. You get a used part and may have to pull your hair out trying to determine if is the part or some other problem that is causing it not to work. Some of you will get lucky and get a new condition part at a decent price. Others will likely get a piece of garbage that, if your lucky, has a visible defect, like a cracked core, so you know you just have to RMA it.

I wish Newegg would either own up to the fact they are just reselling returns, or actually have the items refurbished. It's smarmy.

Oh, too bad I'm saving for a Geforce 4

One of those 1500+'s would make a great upgrade for my 1Ghz T-Bird.

nope, they take them back if they are bad WITHOUT restocking fee... awesome company Text

Do you ended up paying the return shipping if the product, new or refurbish, is defective?

Well, if they call it refurbs, it has been returned before, that sounds like they are owning up to it to me. What else would refurb be? As for not working, yah, if its refurbed it should be at least tested to see if its in working order, if they aren't doing this its bad. I don't have any personal experiance with this though, because I've never tried thier refurbs.

A refurb should be something that has been factory refurbished to "as new" condition. Selling customer returns is just selling used goods. I buy factory refurbs a lot. So far most of the stuff comes shrinked wrapped and packaged like it was new. Other than the plain brown boxes, you couldn't tell it wasn't new. You can tell with customer returns.
