I bought a Newegg mobo "refurb". Arrived with no manual, cables, or anything except the board in a Fedex box. Spent three days trying to diagnose why it would post and boot but not start Windows. It was obviously hosed, since I replaced it with another mobo and it worked fine. Definitely was not worth the wasted time and defnitely would not call it a "refurb". As someone else said, refurbished means returned to factory spec and tested.

I thought the CPU was bad cause i was having reboot problems it turns out the Epox 8k7a i had didn't like hte XP's no matter what i tried cause my replacement didn't work either... took care of that problem with an upgrade to a Iwill XP333 ver 2.1 >>

Some of these refurbs could also be from AMD like the XP1600+ I RMA'd to AMD coz the core looked chipped staright out of teh reatil box. I wasn't willing to chance trying it and sent it right back. Got my new processor back today, and it was a later stepping! Thanks, AMD.

I got a question about these Fry's combos. When I buy one, the receipt has separate entries for the CPU and the MB. Does anyone know if I can return the MB and keep the CPU. I got enough MBs, but not enough CPUs. If so, you can pick up CPUs for cheap.

if you look at you receipt, it says it's a combo. above the 2 entries for the cpu and mb ("A XP 1700+Bare:FIC AN11"), it gives the info on the combo and after the 2 items, it has a listing of "TOTAL SYSTEM PRICE".

my guess would be that they'll probably see that and not allow it. you can always ebay it or sell it here.

<< Do you guys normally pay 15% restock fee when you do RMA with Newegg? >>

um newegg will only exchange refurbs im pretty sure.
>>

They will refund your money if there are no more identical refurbished items. This just happened to me with a (as it turned out) defective refurbished motherboard I purchased.

I'd take the chance again...but only if I wasn't on a tight time schedule. All the time wasted can be problematic.

It would be great if those of you who ordered these would report back your overclocking success with these chips. My biggest concern would be that many of these got returned simply because they weren't great overclockers. I'm assuming if you got one of those, and decided to return it, you'd get stuck with the 15%.

they come with a 30 day warranty just like oem. I complained LOUDLY about some refurb cases that weren't "refurbished" at all and they gave me a break on the price.

Caught the FedEx carrier at my door today - the processor looks good. No AS on the core or bridges. In fact, it looks brand spankin' new. I'll install it later today to make sure it's good.

we should make a sticky poll thread for the newegg refurbs so we have statistics how percentage that is good/bad, etc.

So I'm curious to know how many people got bad CPUs vs functioning ones?

Was it worth it to save ~$20 to chance it?

Got my 1700+ and Duron 950. 1700+ turned out to be a boxed processor, with HS/F. Both processors look brand new.

I got mine they look new-I saved alot more than $20 apiece on mine-I think closer to $40-$60 on the athlon and the xp. Fedex is currently shipping me 17 orders from newegg all refurb stuff.

Well, bad new on 1 processor. The 950 Duron was going to replace a temp 1200 Athlon in my mother's PC. I installed the 950 into the K7SEM, even after changing bus to 100mhz and it just would not boot. It is going back to NewEgg via RMA. Oh yeah, upon further inspection the CPU did have some traces of artic silver on it...Oh well, I took the chance

I got a refurbished Athlon 900 mhz Thunderbird, and the edge of the core was chipped a little bit. Not sure what to do with it, I just installed on an also refurbished motherboard. It has been working fine for several days, and it stays between 38 C to 45 C using Volcano 5 HSF. Does anyone know the long-term effect of a slightly chipped core on the system? I figured if I retun it, I probably wouldn't get a replacement and it's not worth the trouble. I'll keep testing for another two weeks to find out. So far my experience with Newegg's refurbs has been positive.
