Newegg.com fishyness...

I've heard about their outrageous prices on single orders s/h, so I decide to buy everything I needed at once when I needed my IBM 60GXP. When exploring shipping options (I need this stuff FAST, before a LAN party this weekend), I stumbled on a little quirk...

My order consist of:
2 Enermax thermal sensing fans
2 Teflon ATA100 cables
1 IBM 60GB 60GXP (To complete my RAID) Hard drive
1 ATI Radeon LE 32MB DDR (TV-Out version) Video card
1 Tube of Arctic Silver Premium thermal compound

2 day FedEx shipping cost $30.04 to Georgia. In an attempt to save shipping cost, (Which WERN'T outrageous to begin with in my case) I removed 1 ATA100 cable & saw it change to $31.24! How could shipping LESS product possibly cost MORE to ship?! This means the so-called "shipping calculator" is not actually calculating shipping, but calculating how much profit they make on multiple items... ie: They make $6 less on the cable so they inflate shipping by $1.20 without subtracting the previous shipping charge! Isn't it illegal to charge for services not given? In this case, they charged extra shipping charges for less shipping cost.

Their shipping calculator isn't perfect. In fact, its a mystery to me. Who cares, as long as the total comes out to less than competitors, it doesn't really matter

This would actually be the least of my worries about a store, just as long as the shipping charges are reasonable. They don't have to be exact and rarely ever are anyway. The thing is that Newegg tends to ship the different items in sparate packages, which certainly doesn't save money.

Manipulating the items in our cart to figure the lowest possible shipping rates? Great..

bah, newegg isn't such a hot deal for CA'ers who have to pay sales tax + shipping on each order

Hmm, they probably make their highest profit margins on cables (an IDE cable costs something like $1 to manufacture). However, I think it's just a case of a complex, flawed shipping calculator. I doubt anything sinister is going on.

There isn't anything illegal about marking up prices on shipping. Retailers do it all the time whether it's to cover administrative costs or just to make a profit. It would be a different story if they charged you for services never rendered...meaning they never delivered your stuff period.

I agree with what someone else said...the bottom line is what counts...

CyberZer0, I think I understand the point you're trying to make. Their shipping prices are definitely a scam. As far as their prices, if they beat another competitor by a couple bucks but the bottom line includes inflated shipping costs, I'll pay the few bucks to deal with the honest retailer. Newegg hooks you on what appears to be good prices on OEM and refurbished products. I personally am not into giving my money to anyone that isn't straightforward from the get-go and only backs more than half their goods with a measly 30-day warranty.
