FYI hardware canucks has an article on XFX's lineup. looks like the 'black edition' cards on newegg are the cream of the crop (for the time being) and are the "HD 7970 Black Edition Double Dissipation (DD)"

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/news/video/xfx-shows-off-their-hd-7970-lineup/

edit: hmmm maybe not such a hot item. noisier and hotter. http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Graphi...-7970-3GB-Black-Edition-and-CrossFire-Results
I can't speak for the guys at HC, but at least in our results we found that it was much quieter. Which is what we'd expect for an open air cooler versus a blower.

I looked on their US website but they were OOS. U.S. and Canadian orders must ship from different warehouses or something.

Reading through your article I don't see any mention of the upgraded PCB. From the specs given out by XFX, they say the BDD edition has a 2 oz. copper PCB and solid caps. Not sure about the discrepancy here??

There isn't a discrepency; every 7970 is a "2 oz copper" card. All of these claims of 2 oz copper, solid caps, ferrite cores, etc are in comparison to budget, low-end video cards. High-end cards always feature these higher-end components as they're necessary for the kind of temperatures and wattage high-end cards push.

Thanks for the clarification. So as of today, it looks like all the different cards use the same PCB and just differ on their cooling design.

God I hate the ebay vultures... Someone has them listed for 700ea and states that they are from newegg and he will have them tomorrow...

This is where a lot of them went. Congrats to everyone who bought one. I decided to pass for the moment.

I really want to hold out for an aftermarket card with a beefier VRM. I was so tempted to get in on this before they sold out. The beefy VRM on the msi lightning GTX 580 for instance makes a world of difference for overclocking compared to the reference 580.

Also, ugh @ the ebay vultures

You have 580s in Sli. You can afford to wait on Kepler.

I also have two PC's.. Until recently I also had another system with 6970 xfires. (sold them)

The cost doesn't bother me, I like new and shiny Also, there's a handful of games that kind of struggle at max detail 2560x1600 on the 580 SLI, such as Witcher 2 with uber sampling, or metro 2033
maxed out. Thats easy to fix, if you turn the quality down 1 notch the SLI handles both games ridiculously well. Anyway, I'd love to see how the 7970s handle it.

I am going to wait for one of the monster aftermarket cooled cards. Either gigabyte SOC or MSI lightning, I think they're being released at the end of this month. I just need to resist temptation for a couple
of weeks.

Isn't Metro 2033 insanely poorly optimized anyway? If so, I wouldn't spend money just to get max settings in there ^_^

That said, I'm on a single 5850 here, so I probably wouldn't be able to run it at all... the upgrade will come soon! I'm waiting for custom cards, though :whiste:

Yeah, it probably is. Its funny though, because while metro 2033 looks nice - the max settings dont' look too different than medium. Also, metro 2033 performs worse than crysis 2, while crysis 2 definitely looks better (and also isn't restricted to 95% indoor environments like metro 2033).

Metro runs well on powerful hardware until you turn on the DOF effect. For what it does it is broken or extremely unoptimized. It cuts your framerate by a huge margin.

Damn, looks like AMZN saw how fast the cards sold out at Newegg and then price-gouged.

It took them 5 hours to sell out at Newegg which isn't that impressive at all. When the 480's were released they would sell out in 5 minutes.

Amazon has links and part numbers for some 7950s, any other details about them? They look expensive on there, but I doubt that will be the price at launch.

Yeah when I first looked they were all in stock. I was just curious but it was kinda neat I had my choice of the lot.

I don't see these being high sellers. The first run was slow. I even came back a couple hours later and still a good selection was available.

There are reports over at OCN and XS of people buying 10+ just to put on ebay. Ugh... Hate people sometimes

I'm hoping for an MSI version to hit newegg today with the TFIII

I think the more accurate assumption is that they had thousands of sapphire boards. Looking at their stock levels @ newegg business, they had a TON of stock of the sapphire and HIS models. This wasn't the case with the GTX 480 from what I remember (tracking the stock @ newegg business) The asus , gigabyte and xfx boards sold out within 30 minutes, I believe.

Its really annoying that so many ebay vultures bought them though. I can only hope that nobody would pay the extra to get one from ebay.

Did you pick one up?

Dude, really? GTX 480 had major yield issues. Just Google "GTX 480 yields."

I was actually gonna say this. Comparing the two in is rediculous. 480's came out with the knowledge that there was small reserves, while 7970's had good supply.
