The most expensive vid card I ever bought was my MSI ti4400 when it just came out, I dropped about $225 on it including S&H. Best price at the time and that price stayed solid for another couple of months. Either way that was two years ago and I still use it...plays Doom 3 just fine (800x600 on high quality using DVI out)

Thats alot for a vid card.

But "i need this card" -need? cmon be real . Unless its the last part of a comp, and you're heading off to college or some other reasonable reason I hardly see this as a need

I think the rub is that unlike most components the cost of bleeding edge video cards HAS GONE UP in recent years. You guys remember when the new cutting edge nvidia or 3dfx cards were at max $200-300 then droped FAST. Well instead of this price decreasing like cpus, motherboards, and other items its actaully GONE UP to get bleeding edge. I doubt its a production cost issue either and is likely purely a profit mechanism. While companies have every right to do this, we as customers don't have to be happy with it and can use our consumer dollars to not purchase jst like expressed in this thread.

you hit it on the head i bought my entire system around this card but have been unable to get the card and i leave in a week and half for college. I need the card to complete my system before i leave. At college i won't have the same resources to order or install the card as i do now so getting this card is important. I was willing to pay 399 and wait a couple days but evga is backordered so I paniced thinking there would be no way to get this card before i left then I got an e-mail saying this was instock so I got it. Never again shall i pay this much for vid card but i will today because i have lots of money and for once want to buy a really high end card. To go with my new high end system.

hmm from what i understand, the latest vid chips contains substantially higher transistor counts than the top of the line cpus from either intel or amd. R/D costs for these guys are prob the same as cpus if not more with a much shorter life cycle.. im not sure if you can really blame nvidia/ati of price gouging.

I would love to get top of the line boards back down to 200 or so, i remember shitting a brick paying for my gf3 200 back in the day.. but you gotta admit the performance on these things are impressive.

Most of my local Compusa's have the PNY GT card for $399. Much easier to just drive to the store and buy it if you want to pay full retail....

Why would anyone pay so much for a vid card?

I'll tell you.

1. Computers and gaming are some people's hobby. A $400 vid card may not be too much to spend
on something dear to their heart.

2. Some people have lots of disposable income(not me). $400 may not seem like alot of money to
some people. Remember, not everyone's as poor as you.

3. Some people have got to have the best components all the time. They buy the latest stuff
and sell their old parts to you while they're still worth something.

No, it's the consumers that are gouging the consumers. Dont forget, price is controlled by demand. So many ppl want it so badly and aint willing to wait. That's why price is so high.
