Never had to RMA something to Newegg so I can't comment...but is this the same case with Newegg Canada? I'm gonna order for maybe 800CAD of PC parts tomorrow and don't want to have to send hardware back and get the "Customer caused damage" bullshit...

Had the same issue when I returned a defective Motherboard a couple years ago. Damn thing wouldn't post. Sent it back and then they told me the pins were bent. BS....

They attempted to return it to me and I refused the UPS shipment. They were then forced to issue me a refund. I think they suspended my account because of that. Oh well. That was my last order with them.

I think I'm pretty much done with Newegg too. They pissed me off with my last return.

I returned a motherboard that was having compatibility issues. I boxed it up nicely and shipped it back to them. They said it was damaged so they would't take it back and sent it back to me. What I got back was missing the socket cover and a bunch of socket pins were bent. Whoever inspected it must have damaged it and blamed it on me.

Damn, that's shady. I used to order from Newegg quite often; now it's Amazon Prime for EVERYTHING from computer parts/supplies to baby gear to tools, to "lady's day" items for my wife that I refuse to be seen buying at the store

What happened to Newegg? They used to be THE BEST and THE go-to place for everything computer-related.

They probably put some sort of performance metric in place that is totally unrealistic; x% of $ back to newegg on returns or exchanges. Your return crosses paths with a tech who is looking to get a bonus payout? Whoops you smashed your socket.

I recently had a big problem buying a motherboard from Newegg but I couldn't prove they were in the wrong at all, it's a long boring story so I'll skip it. If they had decent customer service they would have known that I'd been a customer at newegg for 11+ years, spent thousands of dollars with them over that time, and they could have just refunded me the $65 for the defunct Motherboard, but no, they went the "it's broken because of something you did" route. Not a great way to treat such a longtime and much spending customer. Plus i've been working with computer parts most of my life, I know when there's something wrong with a computer part, which isn't very often, but it happens.

Oof, I was thinking I wouldn't get into all that. But, I might still buy from Newegg if the price is right >_> - Amazon charges Tax now in Arizona which is a big downer. Prime is awesome but not free and I don't buy enough things to make use of getting a membership.

Unless you have truly bad customer service, the investment in truly being great at it doesn't generally pay off. In this thread alone, how many people speak strictly about wherever is cheaper?

That being said, NewEgg's customer service has always been fine for me. As good as Amazon? Nope. Good enough to get my business if the price is right? Yep. All else being equal, I will go Amazon because of the customer service but that's all else being equal.

Amazon has too much junk in the listings. I don't need 10+ pages of crappy accessories in different colors written in different ways so you can't easily filter them. Their product pictures and description makes me angry.

A recent Newegg experience: a bogus "rush" (expedited) order (from another state) for a $700 unlocked iPhone was attempted to be charged to my Newegg account, using a credit card of mine that was last used there. Luckily, was able to log in to my Newegg account, cancel the bogus order, delete all CC information on file, and change my account password.
After complaining to a CSR via online chat, the CSR declined to offer any further information on how this bogus Newegg order & CC charge had occurred. Even though I had the complete name, address & phone number of the person that had evidently used my Newegg account & CC to place the order.
How was this Newegg order, destined for another state (and not the same address as my CC billing address) even allowed to be processed?
Subsequently Newegg has disabled my ability to log in to my Newegg account, never apologized or followed up on replying to my request for further information. The CSR even suggested that I should report the bogus CC charge attempt to my local area police.

Well, Newegg isn't bad if you don't have a Microcenter or Fry's around and don't like shopping Amazon, which has the most horrible search function around. (In Amazon's case, about the only way to really find the proper item is to search by part numbers, not descriptions.)

But I have yet to have Amazon pack as badly as Newegg. For instance, bought a 2TB WD Black hard drive last week from Newegg. Get it and open the box and shake my head for another crappy packing job from Newegg. One does not do a proper packing job by putting the hard drive in the bottom of an empty box and then packing the box full of kraft paper. While all the padding from the paper is great if the box gets hit on its sides or top, the box will most generally hit on the bottom, just where the hard drive was laying without any padding.

Of course, the hd was defective...refused to even be recognized by the BIOS of the motherboard.

I agree. I built a large new server ($5k+) earlier this year for home and even though I am an Amazon Prime member, I bought most of the big components on Newegg because they were significantly cheaper than Amazon.

I had issues where a 7970 I bought was squeeling and had bad coil whine. Newegg cs made me contact HIS in China. 2 weeks later they respond in broken English (HIS) and ask me to send it in overseas. I then had to contact newegg cs several times with a copy of the chat dialogs before they took the card for a refund. This card had a 30 day refund or exchange policy. The card I have now, no coil whine at all.

add maybe 4 years to the 2 years. Tho really newegg has always been crap, they were just early in the game when the game was crappy.

I sometimes order stuff on amazon even when its a bit more expensive... and I have been slickdealing, fatwallet and hotdeal forum for 12+ years. However, when you add in a possible problem a few bucks just isn't worth it.

Until Amazon screws up an order and then you'll be in "sky is falling" mode again and have to find somewhere else you're sure is perfect and then the circle of life continues.

I wouldn't say they've always been crap. I've only used their customer service a couple of times. Once, several years ago, I was building a PC for a neighbor and the case arrived with a dent in it. I called Newegg and they refunded the price of the case and let me keep it for the shipping cost, which was fine by my neighbor as I just pounded the dent out with a mallet.

The other time, however, was more recently -- in late 2008/early 2009. I moved to a new home and town in October and when I moved, updated all of my shipping information on Newegg, Amazon, etc. In December, they had a good deal on a Panasonic plasma and I needed one for my man cave so I bought it. It didn't show up and showed some weird tracking status. Apparently, the shipper (Towne Air Freight) was somehow given my OLD address (I still don't know how that happened) and would not release the TV to me. I spent quite a bit of time on the phone with Newegg and finally reached someone authorized to call Towne and release the TV so I could go pick it up. It was a huge cluster but in the end, it got resolved.

At the end of the day, like others have mentioned, I do prefer Amazon. I'm a Prime member and also have the Amazon Rewards card, so I have extra incentive to order from them. I used to spend quite a bit at Newegg every year (ranging from high hundreds to a few thousand per year) but since 2008, my purchases have dramatically dropped and I will only buy from them when there is an insane deal. In the case of my server, Newegg was cheaper on several large components (RAID card, motherboard) and that wasn't even counting the additional 15%-20% coupons that they sent me which I used to save even more. The only thing I'm really hesitant to order from them is hard drives.

Amazon has great customer service for the most part but they've pissed me off before. For example, a few years ago, the Harry Potter blu-ray set went on sale for $70. I ordered it for my wife for Christmas. A couple days later, the price dropped to $40. Now, note, the copy I originally ordered HAD NOT YET SHIPPED (it was in shipping soon status). I called Amazon and asked for a price adjustment and the lady refused, saying I'd just have to place a new order for the $40 set and return the other set I received. Not the end of the world, but I thought that was kind of dumb and ended up costing both Amazon and me more time and money when a simple credit would've saved everyone hassle.

I had 20 orders through Newegg.com in 2012. Most of those were extreme sales on Zalman CPU HSFs, Antec power supplies, and some server parts I couldn't find anywhere else. In 2003, when Newegg.com still cared about CS, I have 8 pages of computer hardware purchases, which is 100+ items long.

Comparatively, I purchased 143 times from Amazon.com in 2012, and roughly 2/3 of these items could have been purchased at Newegg.com (e.g. games, computer parts, etc), but I chose not to because of their now ridiculous return policies.

Newegg.com in 2012 compared to 2003 is about like comparing Blizzard as a company at the same points in time.

I also don't understand the claims of Amazon being almost always cheaper than Newegg. Seems most stuff I look up to compare is usually the same price or cheaper on Newegg than Amazon with only a few exceptions here and there.

I think it depends on the components and if you manage to hit certain sales/ price matches. For my most recent build I was able to get the motherboard and CPU for less through Newegg due to discount codes but the RAM and case was cheaper through Amazon - the case significantly more so since Prime doesn't charge for case shipping and Newegg exempts cases from free Shoprunner shipping - regardless of size! Even before shipping most cases I looked at (Numerous Silverstone and Fractal cases) were $5-$10 less on Amazon before shipping

After getting my first Samsung LCD TV from Amazon in 2007 and seeing their white glove service I been a fan ever since. Amazon is not perfect though because of tax and the add on items that need a $25 order.

I have not ordered from new egg in a long time. I never had a problem with new egg. I even had a dead motherboard back in 2003 and the return was simple but with all the stories now I'd stay away from them.

Since joining Prime, I have not placed in order with newegg. Sometimes I even get overnight free shipping from Amazon. The 2 times I have needed to speak to their CS, they have been exemplary.

I have put things in my cart at da egg, and later that day would not be there. When I would go back to the listing the price would be higher.
