Question about retail vs. OEM.....from what I understand, the retail box comes with a heatsink and fan, whereas the OEM does not(no biggie). I was also led to believe there is a difference in warranty...Is this true? And if it is, is it worth the extra $15-20 for the retail?

RAZ, with oem I believe the warranty is for one year as opposed to the 3 year warranty if you buy it full retail. Retail does come with a stock hs/fan that is fine if you don't oc.

Well, I just bought one, couldn't resist. Hopefully that retail fan won't be that hard to put on.

Per Neweggs warrantee policy:

"All OEM CPU's carry a limited 30 day warranty.
All Retail packed CPU's carry a 3 year manufacturer warranty and must be serviced by the original manufacture."

If you are not going to overclock, the retail version is a better deal considering you don't have to buy a heatsink.

Question about stepping - are all 1.4 the same stepping?
I think I read that somewhere, but may not be the latest

it's no the same. Some are the special AYHJA stepping that can easilyi be pushed to like 1.6ghz from a 1.4

Parstron: Whoops, when you check out of newegg after a CPU order, they state you had better get that CPU back in 7 days for an exchange of a new one.........otherwise.....

Has anyone gotten the Retail Box 1.4, and if so was it a AYHJA stepping?
You think there's anyway to know the chance of getting an
AYHJA in the Retail box?

I got 1.33 version from newegg.com AYHJA stepping(it is AYHJA 9), when it was cheaper than non-AYHJA ones . Anyway, on KT7a-R (refurbished from newegg, too) it wont go higher than 1.45 (10x145) without bumping the voltage, even than the Prime95 halts calculations, and states hardware failure(I have 300W no name powersupply, and lots of drives, so it could be PSU issue). But windows works fine , nothing crashed after hours of work, no lockups, temp is at 35C idle, 50C under heavy load. I'll just leave it there. So it is not a huge overclock, but good enough for me, good luck with your attempts.

They tested a AMD 1.4 GHZ 266 mhz FSP with AYHJA stepping over at cluboverclocker.com for a review of the CPU and could only overclocker it to 1.53GHz.

Conclusion

AMD's 1.4GHz, 266MHz bus Athlon "Thunderbird" isn't exactly an Overclocker's dream come true. Being that it overclocks and performs exactly like the previous 1.33GHz CPU, Overclockers should probably opt for the 1.33GHz processor. Now 1.53GHz isn't exactly slow, it's hauling ass! It is just that you can save a few bucks by going with the 1.33GHz CPU and achieve the same overclocking results. Now if you are simply upgrading, there is nothing like owning the fastest. Splurging for the 1.4GHz CPU for an upgrade would be a very good idea, especially if overclocking is not high on your list of things to do.

The 1.4GHz Thunderbird is one heck of a CPU but I think we have seen the last of the great overclocking Thunderbirds end at 1.33GHz. The heat generated by the 1.4GHz CPU is complete absurd and I would not recommend using anything less than one of our top 5 coolers you see listed on the right side of the page. On to the next adventure, the Palomino!

It is a projector that emits a beam of light that is detectable by the human eye. This beam tricks the mind into thinking it is a 3 dimensional object. The power of the beam is 3,000,000 lumens. The beam is cooled by one of the new cold fusion reactors. These things are really cool. They just came out. They can power a whole city block for 80 years and they are only the size of a memory card.

Well the 7 days is probably for DOAs. The web site clearly shows 30 days for the OEM and 3 years for the retail. You can see that on the next screen after you order a CPU and press the check out. If they are listing 7 days and 30 days without any explanation, the longer one takes precedent.
