Plus I'm sure a lot of us are quite picky about what we want - we'd want to get a specific item, and if you say exactly what you wanted model/etc to someone not tech savy, it's hard to say exactly what they'd buy. While they might buy the part you wanted, it might not be EXACTLY what you had planned for.

Damnit! Why did they do this directly after XMas?! ARG! Now I'm stuck with bestbuy giftcards: where DDR only goes up to PC2700, processor(core clock, not FSB!:Q) affects performance more than the Via Onboard Video, and a P4/2.4Ghz/<U>400Mhz</U> is $250.

People generally don't give computer parts for 3 reasons:

1: They don't understand what your asking for; even if you give a direct link, they probobly don't know/understand what a CPU, video card, or MB is.
2: They aren't internet ready, and don't trust online retailers with their credit card #'s.
3: They don''t see any "Christmas" or "Birthday" spirit in giving you a new CPU.
For two of those, they would probobly still be willing to get you a GC.
