BUMP for a good deal.

I will wait for the Thoroughbred out to upgrade from my cheesy Intel
celeron500@800.

YES I am going to support AMD all the way. Buy their most expensive chip to help them out. I detest intel as they are a bunch of liars
same as those DELL bastard. "no punt intended for any of them that are good"

I will buy an AMD cheap even if they are 500 a pop. Coz they are soo much better then Intels crap.

I'd stay away from those cheap motherboards (FIC, ECS, Shuttle, etc.). One RMA and you'll have wasted enough time that you could have bought two high quality motherboards (Asus, Abit, Soyo, etc.). They are cheap for a reason - poor quality assurance, cheap components, lousy design.
IMHO

I would recommend staying away from the k75sa. About 3 weeks after they came out i bought two of them. ECS's quality controls is very bad. Based upon what log you get determines if you will get a good board or not. The first one i bought, i was very happy with and was a very stable board. The second one i bought was horrible. I installed Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP2 and would get all kinds of memory dumps (4 or more a day). It was very strange because the only thing i had in this computer was a 52X CD Rom, 20gig hard drive. There was no sound card or anything. I was running a older Nvidia TNT Card. I was using an antec 400w power supply. I had two 256mb Crucial Memory Sims. I was curious one day and put my "good" board in the computer to see if it would eliminate the crashes (i didn't change anything else). and all crashes stoped. Both boards had the latest bios revision. I had the opportunity to see 5 other boards. Two of which where flaky just like the bad one i had. Oh and the intergrated network card (don't use it). Im an application developer and do a lot of database programming and i kept loosing connection to my database and coudn't figure it out. I put a replacement network card in one of the pc's and it didn't help. I then replaced both of them and i never had the problem again. In general it just seemed to be alot worse than my linksys cards

<< IF im NOT going to do any OVerclocking or messing with my motherboard at all
would the k7 SOYO DRAGON or dragon plus be a good motherboard for me to have for the money
>>

well, i don't overclock, and i have the dragon plus. no complaints. but I also bought a Fong Kai case for more than I could have gotten a more basic case too because I thought the extra level of quality was worth it.

TCWO prices have gone back up... newegg is still cheaper... I think it's wise to wait another couple of weeks... I expect that the XP1800+ will be down to $110 for the OEM chip.

Slycat,

What tweaking are you referring to for the ECS K7S5A? I just turned mine on last night (using XP1600+) and it seemed to require very little tweaking from what I could see. It's not quite performing up to my expectations yet, but it's a bit memory starved right now. A little boost in RAM, plus moving to DDR and I think this is going to be a solid performer.

I can't comment on the quality control aspect, as this is only a sample of one. But I've read really good things about this board (on newegg!) and that's why I decided to go with it. And you simply cannot beat the price!

Good luck out there.

The price bounce always happens before a new line of chips comes out. I remember the T'birds kept on creeping up in price before the XPs came out. They do it so they can "cut" the prices later.

Just some FYI, alot of the (most?) of the newer KT333 chipset boards support USB 2.0 now. Although I don't know for sure if they're out yet, I do know alot of them have USB 2.0 specs.

I got the MSI Pro2U board KT266A board for a friend's system recently..and can't setup the hard drives on the RAID controller as plain IDE drives like I can on my Asus A7V133 board. With a jumper, I can disable RAID, and the RAID controller is just an extra ATA/100 controller. You can use the drives on the MSI RAID controller...but setting one up is a pain in the .....and you can forget about adding a 2nd drive to it w/o formatting/losing data. It WANTS RAID. If anybody knows else, please enlighten me.

F.Y.I. I have a K7S5A with a T-bird 1.4 and 512 MB of crucial DDR...this board was so simple to set up that my cat could do it and it has been running ROCK solid with absolutely no problems for 6 months now....

wildwolf, how is that msi board aside from what you mentioned? can you add more than one hd to the raid controllers, with just the master ones running as raid? i was thinking about getting that mb, but i'm having trouble deciding on getting it or waiting for the kt333a's.

Tried two of the k7s5a's and ended up sending both back to newegg, this was with 1.2 tbirds and pc2100 mem. The gigabyte board from the xp1800 give away was a piece of crap. I bought a SHUTTLE AK31A and installed the xp1800 and it fired right up no problems. I have used several of the Abit boards running 1.2 tbirds w/133 sdram and never had a problem.
