If you saw my thread earlier on cpu/overclocking you could see that I might need a new cpu. Since I'm at work I decided to go ahead and purchase a new AMD XP 2400+ retail). I decided to call a Compusa close to work to see how much it would cost.....THEY ARE ASKING FOR $300 FOR THE 2400+!!!!!!! I bought the 2400+ with one day shippping from newegg.com for $184!!
Newegg rocks!!!!

P.S. there is a chance that I will be able to salvage my current cpu. If so, I'll be selling my new one unopened for less then cost. I will do that because I'm a idiot and I'm punishing myself for being a ass!!!!

As much as I order through Newegg, I still shop around before buying. Yes, Newegg's service/RMA, reliability, product selection, delivery/tracking is certainly best-in-class, but there are numerous vendors out there that come close at a cheaper cost. I didn't say price simply b/c Newegg has an annoying habit of charging a premium on hot products based on "internet chatter", and they're rarely the market leader when it comes to price cuts (look at current memory prices for instance).

Heck, I'm surprised CompUSSR was priced that low. Or even had such a fast processor. I was stunned once to walk in and see a motherboard priced at $346.

CompUSA is only really good for stuff that has a manufacturers suggested retail price or that has "standard" pricing that doesn't change much due to supply and demand and competition, like software or keyboards and mice. Even with those, it's best to check around, and you can still get most of it cheaper online.

There are other websites that do sell things slightly cheaper then newegg but I'm willing to pay "extra" (we're talking about a few dollars)
because of the history I have with them. In the past year I have bought over 15 items from them and one very minor error, I ordered express shipping (extra 2.99) and they didn't process it in one day, I didn't complain but I saw on my cc statement that they refunded me the money back.

BLW the one for $143 was probably a oem. Newegg has it for $146. I bought the retail.

RE:"I didn't mention that b/c I didn't want him to feel bad"

Well, what the heck, he's a newbie on AT...got to break em in right. <G>

$151 for retail box at tcwo.com

Text

TCWO is a very reputable dealer, BTW.

I suspect Newegg will drop to the 150s on the retail box pretty soon. $30 is more than a "little more". It's like 20%.

Dang... $143 for the OEM of the 2400+? Hmmmm. How easy is it to unlock the multipliers on those CPUs?

TCWO is my new find. They were cheaper than Newegg and had a good rating. I just ordered a XP2700+ for $269, cheaper than newegg.

They are unlocked; but again, you'd have better luck with a 2100+ depending on your mobo and RAM. Only nForce2 and KT400 boards allow access to the lower multis (13 and below) for the 2400+ and higher CPUs. The 2400+ is a good choice for those who don't wanna mod their chip and have PC2100, as they can keep the stock multi of 15x and raise their FSB to OC, while not stressing the PC2100 too much. On the flip side, running > 166mhz FSB would be a stretch with even a 13.5x multiplier if you have PC2700 or better. A 2100+ would offer 13 x 166 = 2.167mhz, or you could raise the FSB further. With OC'ing, FSB adjustments offer much more control and flexibility over multiplier adjustments, as well as increased performance due to more bandwidth.

The 2100+ is still $50 cheaper and is largely the same core (same stepping codes as higher rated T-breds), possibly binned, but often do as well if not better than 2400+ chips (especially older week 40 AIUGB's).

I don't care if the price difference is $10-$15. I will GLADLY pay more for NewEgg. Their customer service, shipping speed, and RMA policy is second to none IMHO. That is why they have gotten thousands of my $$$.

Macro,

If you read my first post, I paid for fed next air totalling 184. the retail was $160.

Also I realize I'm a newbie on this board but if I had to concern myself over a $5-$10 difference in price from one site that I have experience with to another, I wouldn't be purchasing the cpu until I exhausted my resources with my current cpu. Trust me the first place I go to when I purchase something is pricewatch.com.

I'm not defending myself but make sure you read the whole thread before you question me.

The difference is roughly 5%

Oops sorry. I guess you needed it fast.

Newegg is great but they are not the only game in town. More than once they have sent me defective product.

Do you know how many "Newegg rocks" topics are on here?

Yeah I know there are probably hundreds of newegg rocks, I was actually just making fun of Compusa.

In the past year between games and upgrades I've probably spent over $3000 (getting sick to stomach) from various sites. Mainly newegg and EB.com. But I've actually used another site for my panflo fans (I have 5) they were only about $7 dollars. I have to research to find the site again.
I look at it this way....I would rather spend on games and upgrades hoping that it will keep me home on nights and weekends instead of going to bars and on Sunday morning (hung over) realizing that I spent $200 that weekend and have nothing to show for it

I vary purchases between these companies (I'm not rating order of preference, each does better than the other on specific items): 1. NewEgg 2. Monarch 3. MWave 4.(new one) MonitorsDirect.
I would love to include TCWO but living in the same state means I have to pay tax which ruins some of their deals for me.
I was very impressed with MonitorsDirect when I got my Hitachi CML174 from them as they really bend over backwards for customer service. Too bad I really don't need to upgrade my montior that often.

You're a wise man.

As for Compusa. I appears they have to keep some kind of standard margin. That's why you see ridiculous prices on their mobos and CPUs etc.
Their cases and Pss are generally high too. Only when rebates are involved can they compete. Then again they have a big rent and light bill and shareholders to satisfy.
I know they pay about $2 for a belkin USB cable they get $18 for.

I needed an ATA66 IDE cable in a pinch at work and ran to a CompUSA up the street. I didn't pay attention to the price when I grabbed package in the isle. At the register, it rang up at over $20 with tax. I almost fainted. LOL...$20 bucks for an IDE cable.
