I think it was carved from a bar of soap. I wonder if they routed the package through a penitentiary?

Pretty smart if you ask me. I bet the reason why they made that thing and carved it out was to make it weigh the same as the real package so when they ran it through weight, it'd come out the same.

LOL at the "manual".

I wonder what that shroud is made of. Reminds me of a white chocolate easter bunny. Easily the nastiest "edible" thing I've tasted.

It looks like foam, or maybe wax. I wonder what the "CPU" is made out of, though?

Have you tried biting them? You would be surprised at what you can learn by biting stuff. (well within reason!)

"Newegg is aware of a shipping error that occurred with certain recent orders of the Intel Core i7-920 CPU. After investigating the issue internally it appears one of our long term partners mistakenly shipped a small number of demo boxes instead of functional units. Our customer service team has already begun proactively reaching out to the affected customers. In line with our commitment to ensure total customer satisfaction, we are doing everything in our power to resolve the issue as soon as possible and with the least amount of inconvenience to our customers."

I think I called it closely.

So the incorrect spelling and poor printing is a way of alerting others it's a demo? Why not just put a banner across the front then?

For a demo, you just need the box. And you don't need a box with spelling errors on it.

Doesn't look too hard to do - seems like he sprayed foam into the plastic HSF holder and printed out a color photo of the top. I'm not sure what the cpu is made of though.

Ok and what about the box with typos all over it? What about the fake CPU mold?

$300 is a lot of money for one chocolate chip!

Why are they saying demo boxes were shipped?
I agree with other posters. Demo boxes would NOT have spelling errors. The booklet has no purpose other than to add weight. Definitely some kind of scam going on. 300 pieces they said? Someone just made off with $75k. Which is peanuts compared to the punishment (beat down) they will receive when they get caught.

Shame on Newegg for passing the buck and blaming the supplier. Just because they received demo boxes doesn't mean they should have been shipped. Newegg quality control should have caught these errors before shipping as all their packages are inspected by hand before going out the door.

Thanks for picking up my slack, that one was right in front of me and I failed to deliver

I also call major BS on the demo story, mainly due to the poor spelling on the box and the obvious counterfeit of the factory seal. That is, unless Intel has two piles of CPU boxes they use, one being the retail box pile and the other being the defective we-can't-spell, we-can't-print-our-own-labels-properly pile. Yeah, that makes sense.

if they opened your processor box to make sure there was more than a crackerjack prize inside, you'd be bitching about that. can't have it both ways.

Anyone inspecting the physical CPU box for more than five seconds would realize they were demo boxes. Did you see the photos of the box?

In trying to get my brain around this ... this is ridiculous effort of a scam. For a package that is only opened by the end user, this "effort" at counterfeiting or scamming or intent .. makes no sense.

This mis-spellings on the box plus the mock up HSF, booklet, & CPU all sound like mock up packaging. Considering the rumored number of units shipped, I'll guess that something defining at least a case or more were made.

I don't know where all of Intel's CPU are manufactured, but the ones I have bought & bothered to read are from Malaysia. AFAIK English is not commonly the 1st language in that part of the world. It is not unusual even in this day & age for the contract manufacuturer to be required to develop the packaging. Given the locale, they do not have CAD. So you have to "make" some thing for qualification before you start shipping the actual product ... who would have thought?!?!?:sneaky:
Additionally, the material used for the HSF looks like it could be broken without a great deal of effort. Didn't anyone ever have a drop project in "Design Class" in college?? Well, I did. Although on a much smaller scale as I had 2 microscope slides, a cork, & a sheet of paper ... devise something to protect the slides in a drop test from 10'. If the slides don't break == pass ... break == FAIL! But, I digress :\ This packaging sounds like a larger scale drop test to me given container ships & all.

I have also witnessed production managers under pressure to meet shipping quotas. When it gets close to the wire, anything goes, literally.

So *my* theory is the test packaged "product" went out the door either by accident given the unlikely ability of Malaysian dock worker to be able to read English. And/or intentionally by some production manager under pressure to keep his job ... and that is assuming that that person could read English. Besides, I had to make a double take to notice the mis-spellings.

Cool theory, bro, but it fails to take into account that the fab in Malaysia has been making and shipping Intel cpus for years and years. So why would the fab suddenly put out boxes with horrendous spelling errors on them when they've been doing perfect work for years prior to that.

I even looked through my little stack of empty Intel retail boxes, most were from Malaysia, and they go back well before 2008. So, you're saying years of being able to perfectly print English on previous boxes, including the i5 750 and i7 920 boxes I have, became a mystery and obstacle to them?

I think not.
