Check further down in the comments, this guy claims he installed the fake in his motherboard.
hahaha this guy is a complete air head and he put himself on youtube to prove it. He allegedly installed the "CPU without pins" that he mentions, into a motherboard. And, we are supposed to believe that?!

Lets not forget to notice that the seal on the edge was already cut at the beginning of the video as he makes this big discovery. ANY fool could have put any thing in that box!!

I am starting to think that Kyle Bennett was looking for a cheap way to get more traffic to his web site. You know that web site hits == equal income for this "fake news", right? Any fool could have put anything in that box. Imagine that this was like the Tylenol case.

This is *not* proof of anything and is the most irresponsible way possible to handle the situation and that is being kind.

It's been mentioned in the thread already. Newegg is fixing it. A batch was shipped that shouldn't have been, this happens time to time in major logistics.

I think it's really funny that people jumped to the conclusion that Newegg was screwing people. I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't lawsuits already brewing.

I agree, someone is going to get sued over this.

What does newegg do in this situation? Get pissed at supplier and offer to refund price and send a new one for free to buyer? Or do they just say sorry we will exchange and pay for shipping?

I don't think anyone was thinking that Newegg was screwing people. Especially given the fact that they were already doing speedy replacements long before the news started blowing up about it. People were calling up and expecting a hassle and instead getting a "we'll send a replacement out" pretty much immediately.

Newegg's handled this as well as any company can be expected to handle it.

No modern Intel CPU has pins. The pins are in the board. I guess he was used to AMDs, which still use pins on the CPU.

I'm sure it'll probably go to court to recoup all the shipping fees that had to get refunded.

why would new egg give a customer a free cpu? they just stupid. They'll likely overnight a real cpu to said customer and pay for shipping to return the fake.

If there are other issues assuming some customer actually tried to put this in the system and it crap out they'll maybe take care of it too.

They'll then likely head to whomever bought these from and deal with them. You can bet intel wants to know what's up too.

kyle bennett I have heard off before. What's his story?

He's the owner/operator of [H].

He's got a... strong personality might be the way to put it nicely. Some people don't care for him very much. Maybe a lot of people...

He posted some stuff after 9/11 that made it obvious that he was a right wing nut job and that's about all I know about his "personality". I believe other have has some more personal experiences?

Newegg is trying to cover their ass here but the reality is they have been buying from suppliers or their suppliers have been buying from suppliers outside the ordinary and approved supply chain. It's scary to think NewEgg (or their suppliers) has been buying outside the normal channels and potentially exposing all their clients to stolen or fake goods.
Indeed. Disturbing is this.

Makes me wonder how many XP Pro OEMs that Newegg sells are fake. Remember the reports of grey-market HDs being sold by Newegg as "OEM/bulk", that had no mfg warranty when checked at the web site?

Well, is anyone surprised by this at all? VL and rahvin bring up a good point, that Newegg sources their parts from wherever and whomever gives them a good price, supply chain be damned.

Ever wonder why in the same parts category, be it video cards, memory, motherboards, etc., that there are parts that have one return policy and others, seemingly exactly the same--even from the same manufacturer---that have another return policy?

To wit:

Newegg's Standard 30-Day Return Policy:
  • Return for refund within: 30 days
  • Return for replacement within: 30 days

Newegg's Limited Replacement Only 30-Day Return Policy:

  • Return for refund within: non-refundable
  • Return for replacement within: 30 days

This policy difference is all over the place for item after item....such as memory that's returnable for refund or replacement and memory that isn't refundable. Same for monitors and many other products. Video cards that are able to be returned for refund and those that aren't....just replacement.

Heck, they've even got products that are returnable for refund but NOT for replacement. Or the Manufacturer Warranty Only: "You cannot return the item to us for any reason, no returns, no refunds. Any problems with the product, go to the manufacturer" return policy.

Don't know about you, but when I buy memory, monitor, motherboard, whatever from Fry's, MicroCenter, etc., I damn sure can return for replacement or refund most anything I've bought there. (Open box items are sometimes restricted and some parts are replacement only.)

True, there are time restrictions (typically 7-15 days) and opened software or DVDs/CDs are just replacement only (as is with any store--online or B&M), but Newegg has made return categorization a fine art.

But grey marketing has been a long "tradition" of online selling, going waaaay back in electronics, esp. high(er) end stereo components and cameras. And of course, this practice still happens but these items can be weeded out by the warranty provided, if one is provided at all, by the seller. Things like "We provide our own warranty in lieu of manufacturer's warranties" is a sure sign you're buying grey marketed items....

Even seen bicycles get grey marketed. Cannondale has a huge batch of their bikes show up in Costco quite a while ago.....they were destined for Asia but got diverted by an unscrupulous buyer and they ended up in Costco. Initially Cannondale refused warranty service on them....but relented for the customers. Still blasted Costco for it, though.

So, it wouldn't surprise me one iota that Newegg sources from anyone and everyone, authorized or not. Price is Newegg's driving force and sometimes the result isn't always expected.

I think any sales policy is null and void when the seller clearly sold something that was not as described.

People are being advised if sellers are not cooperating with buyers to notify law enforcement. Newegg certainly will take care of everyone I'm sure.

http://gizmodo.com/5488106/a-bizarre-story-newegg-fake-core-i7-processors-and-a-cease--desist-order

I forgive the dude's overly snide narration because he just received a fake Intel Core i7-920 processor from Newegg. A Newegg supplier, D&H Distribution, sent them 300 fake processors in a batch of 2000. And threatened sites who reported it.

Several people received demonstrably fake Core i7 processors from Newegg, like the guy in this video, and reported it into HardOCP's forums. Newegg's been immediately replacing counterfeit processors with legit ones, but the whole thing's still pretty fishy. They're blaming one of their suppliers, D&H Distribution for sending them the bad chips.

For reporting on it, D&H is serving up a C&D to HardOCP, telling them to "remove the contact and any reference to D&H from your website" and to "post an immediate retraction and apology which shall remain posted for not less than thirty days." They're shady dudes, obviously, so what do you expect?

What makes me sad is Newegg's shitty cover story:

"Newegg is aware of a shipping error that occurred with certain recent orders of the Intel Core i7-920 CPU. After investigating the issue internally it appears one of our long term partners mistakenly shipped a small number of demo boxes instead of functional units."
Demo boxes with completely fake products? Right.

Intel, meantime, is currently investigating a flood of counterfeit Core i7-920s hitting the market.

Myself, meantime, isn't ordering anything from Newegg, until they're more forthcoming about the issue. And I was just thinking about building a new PC for Bad Company 2. Good thing the game's still pretty broken! (Thanks EA.) [HardOCP via Hot Hardware]

My question is: Why does Newegg NOT buy straight from Intel? Why go through a middleman? They obviously sell tons of tons of CPUs to make bulk buying profitable.

Chances are Newegg doesn't buy in large enough volumes to deal directly with Intel.

Almost all companies go through distributors. Very few companies deal directly with a manufacturer.

Something else to chew on.

Just as this story broke and became widespread Newegg increased the price of the AMD PII X4 965. Newegg had been selling the 965 at $180.00 with free shipping for about a month but after people started receiving bad i7s the price was increased to $210 with $7 shipping.
