I stopped buying from newegg some time ago after the last items I bought, rosewill toner cartridges, weren't full even though they showed being full in the printer.
I've spent nearly $10k with Newegg over the years, but I haven't bought anything from them in at least three years. Their filtering options are among the best, but cross shopping wit Amazon and they're usually cheaper since I have Prime. I continue to check, but it seems to me that Newegg can't compete in the price to my door department against Amazon.
Selling used or returned parts as new is a good way to kill the reputation of any company. Normally they have an outlet for these parts or sell them as open box....but they have to be truthful about the process. Often those that make these bad decisions make the mistake of thinking the consumer will never know. They forget the consumer has eyes and a brain.
I also have never encountered this. Would have been more reputable to me if it was more than one person making the claim based on more than one instance. They were nice enough to point out that Newegg took care of them. With the amount of refurbished items Newegg sells, I would be content to let the rep on the phone take care of the one situation, and leave it at that.
I have purchased tons of stuff from newegg and will continue to. I have never run into a problem, but I'm sure mistakes were made - a part put in the wrong bin etc... I also choose to spend money there, even if it costs a few dollars more because of the stand they take on patent trolls.
