Newegg's hard drive packaging

I ordered some Seagate drives from Newegg and received them in decent condition.

But the packaging sucked.

Two drives are stacked upon each other with one layer of bubble wrap. The drives were not taped together well so as the package was bouncing around the two hard drives were clanking against each other.

The third hard drive was wrapped alone with one layer of bubble wrap. There were some foam peanuts, but not much, hanging out on the bottom of the package.

Anyone else experience crap packaging lately?

Never had any problems with packaging from them. I've ordered OEM drives from them as well. They were packaged great.

When I got my hard drives, they wrapped the drives pretty well in some big bubble wrap. Drives work fine, so I don't care.

Newegg's packaging IMO is not what it used to be, everything used to be tight with nothing floating around. I guess it also matters which warehouse of the three you get your stuff from. Everything always works, but sometimes you wonder why. Or at least wrap the drives separate and then together with more wrap and surround that with peanuts so that they do not move around. If I sold a hard drive to someone I would package it better that the egg does.

For hard drives unless you buy a full box that is shipped in the package from the vendor to the egg, Zip Zoom Fly packs them better. Of course that involves ordering from ZZF.

I would agree. Their packaging used to be better than it is these days.

Totally inadequate packaging. Put it this way - if you packaged a RMA like they package new drives most manufacturers would REJECT it. Bare drive in static bag thrown in a box full of peanuts is NOT adequate packaging for shipment!

This is my experience with Newegg OEM drives.

I don't order HD's from them any more.

Yes I have. The orders out of CA are still packed well. However the orders out of TN have been packaged badly. OEM cpu out of TN came in a clamshell thrown in with some foam peanuts with half the pins bent because it came out of the clamshell. Newegg did RMA it, but blamed it on UPS shipping. OEM cpu out of CA came in clamshell wrapped in bubble wrap in great condition. Maybe the TN packers need some more training?

Really?
How do the manufacturers expect consumers to package drives being RMA'ed to them?

Their instructions are clear. Here is C+P from a Fujitsu SAS RMA:

All products should be returned to FCPA in the original shipping container, or an authorized packaging box for the units being returned. The preferred method for hard drives is the use of foam inserts to enclose the disk drive completely on all surfaces (2-in. foam/surface). Each individual item must be placed in its own anti-static bag. When the original container is not available, a corrugated container with a minimum bursting rating of 200 PSI must be used. Ratings are generally located on the bottom of containers. If foam inserts are not available, do NOT use "peanut" packaging filler material, as this will not support and stabilize the drive during transit and will void the warranty. When the original packaging is not available, contact FCPA's Technical Assistance Center ("TAC") at 800-626-4686, Option 2 for part numbers and replacement packaging ordering information.

Hard drives are more durable than people think.

Even when operating, Samsung Spinpoint Ts are rated for 63Gs of shock. Keep in mind, more than 50gs in a car accident causes serious injury to the human body.

When not operating with all the heads parked, the Spinpoint can withstand 300Gs of shock. And it's not like the Spinpoint Ts are special, Barracudas 11 can withstand 65G and 350G respectively while WD caviar blue can do the same as the Baracudda 11s and the Caviar green can do 65 and 250G. It's pretty damn hard to destroy a hard drive.

Interesting. Never knew that.

The only computer part I've ever had to RMA was some PC2100 Crucial memory sticks. I simply but one of those bubble filled brown manila envelopes for $1 and mailed them with 2-3 stamps.

I can speak for that. My Lite On DVD drive was packed in there. It was bubble wrapped, but my laptop DDR ram and other small components like IDE cables were flying around in the box. WTF. Just stick in some damn bagged air or something. It was kinda ridiculous. It was a small order with just a DVD drive and tiny components like laptop ram (in a plastic case though), IDE cables, 4-pin to 3-pin adapter, SD cards, and all these things were just banging around. Granted, I'm sure nothing really matters, but if that was an HD in there instead of a DVD drive I would be pissed off.

On that note, my WD Black was packed impressively last month.

My 1.5TB Seagate came that way. Static bag in a box full of peanuts and 1 layer of thin bubble wrap. The box was pretty think and it had dents. The HD definitely had room to move around which is a bad thing.

It may vary by warehouse but Newegg does do a crappy job of shipping oem harddrives. I buy all of mine from ZZF. They ship them in a static bag in a plastic shell in a thick foam sleeve in a box of peanuts.

friday, i received 2 oem drives. excellent wrapping on both.

I got a HDD last tuesday and a blu ray rom drive today. Both were in a box with about 2" of peanuts on all sides and then wrapped in 3/4" bubble wrap. The HDD had an extra layer of tape that made it really hard to get the anti-static bag out of the bubble wrap. Seems adequate to me

Same experience with drives. The thin bubble wrap, some packing peanuts jammed in there with other things, all Newegg orders I've had are from CA.

As one person who told me, "I think Newegg is getting too big for its breeches, most of it is still fine but the parts that don't fit are starting to get sloppy, careless, and just not what it used to be."

I'd agree I'm not happy with some of the OEM things Newegg ships, and their (over)growth may be the issue with some of the shipping problems and some of the bad stories I've begun to hear about their customer service which is what they've prided on. They are also shipping slower than they used to in my recent experience.
