newer Cyrix chips - performance?

I've seen mention of the newer Cyrix chips and that they run cool enough for passive cooling and are Socket 370 compatible. I see up to 700MHz for sale on pricewatch. Anyone have a performance comparison between that and a Celeron?

No, no, forget about Cyrix CPU's! They suck! Believe me I had one and the benchmarks almost made me puke. Good thing I was able to return it and get my $ back.

Woohoo! Thanks, danlz! They actually ran the RC5 benchmark, which was the real aim of my quest. For those that hate to click, the article reveals a very cool running (heatsink only) Via C3 800 MHz pumping a whopping *cough* 1.01 Mkeys running RC5! Not exactly a barn burner. Note also that the mobo has to be able to supply a low 1.35 volts to the CPU. Guess I'll stick to Celerons.

I got a VIA C3 733 from Axiontech.com and it runs fine on an older mobo. I've heard about the "heatsink only" thing, but the CPU I got had "fan & heatsink required" printed on the top. I guess the "heatsink only" applies only to the newer 800+ Ezra cores that run 1.35v. Mine's a Samuel2 running at 1.60v. CPU cost $41, motherboard (EPoX EP-3VBM) cost about $20. Gonna be a b-day gift for a buddy who loves Cyrix.

The C3-733 Sammuel2's power consumption is 10.3Watts, actually 1W LESS than the C3-800 Sammuel2. The HSF statement is printed on all C3 speed grades more as a c-y-a statement when running max load during the summer in Death Valley. An Alpha passive HS from Silicone Acoustics or All Electronics will do just fine. Watch your temps, and if too high (over 60C), then just turn on the case fan or slap on an old Socket7 HSF from the junk drawer. Your bud' won't be disappointed.
