Newer mobile telephony protocols

First, let me preface my question by saying that I know absolutely NOTHING about mobile telephony protocols. That being said...

Do newer protocols [CDMA2000 EV-DO] provide better connection/reception than older protocols [GSM 850/900/1900]? My current cell phone [a Motorola V180] gets absolutely horrid reception whenever I move indoors, and I was just wondering if I would see simlar results from newer phones, or if I can expect to have better reception.

Both should have similar reception depending on location but if you travel Internationaly I would stay with GSM as it is more widely used. I think it's about 70 to 80% of the market world wide but don't quote me on that. As for the future I think that CDMA for now has the advantage of being able to have faster connection with the 3G. But there is a new Technology with new GMS phones that is called UMTS and will provide faster speed.

Hmmm... thats good to know about GSM being a more prevalent worldwide standard, but will the newer standards improve call reception? I don't use any of the multi-media features offered by the big service providers, so data transfer rates aren't really my concern.
