Newest Intel NUC setup using 2.5" Drive

SSD adds alot to cost, I was trying to craft something with someone in mind that just wants to be able to stream video ok, and doesn't use it for alot of hard drive intensive tasks and cost was more important. You could always add a SSD later if you wanted, even on the PCIe Mini card slot and keep the other HD as well.

if you are streaming you could find an SSD in that pricerange that would allow basic usage

but yes a 500gb SSD would be a huge cost increase

you can get a 60-120 in that rough price range, especially the 12 if you wait on a sale

I personally have a Samsung 840 Evo SSD, trust me I know the benefit of having one, but I think its a decesion that has to be made on a case by case basis. Not everyone needs one, some users would be better served using a traditional drive to save money.

I think if you're really just looking to stream, a 64 GB SSD is a better choice than a 500GB hard drive, and only marginally more expensive.

If you're going to keep a lot of files or programs stored locally, though, stick with the hard drive.

Keep in mind also, though, that the NUC you listed is way overpowered for a streaming device. I'd get a much lower-end model, unless you're planning on doing some more processor-intensive tasks.

That was exactly my point, it’s a decision that the user has to make based on their needs, I just don't like that attitude that gets thrown around where everything should always be an SSD.

It is interesting though with these new Intel NUC's you can have a traditional plugged into the Sata port and an SSD running from the PCIe port and have both

This would make a great HTPC/DVR, using a small SSD for OS/apps and keep the show storage on the spinning disk.

i still find it hard to pay for a nook. i have a laptop with the same cpu, amount of ram, and a 128gb ssd. and it cost well $650. but its a laptop. but yeah, fun build.

might as well buy the cheaper msata version and get an msata drive since those are no more expensive than 2.5" drives now unless you really really need a 500gb hard drive.

save yourself $100 on the nuc, and spend it on SSDs...

Yea; you can put together a nice 8x8 machine for around $320 if you drop down to the g3220. The i3/i5 are faster than the g3220 but the g3220 gives a heck of a lot of bang for the buck. There are two cases that mini-itx builds typically use (both larger than the nuc) and bother are over priced at around $80. I've used the bq656 is fantastic; other people chant the antec 110 (which I have not used).

The new nuc are nice (a lto nicer than last year model) with regards to ports but they are pricey. Hum. To be honest I'm keeping my eye on mini-pc; by Q3 or perhaps Q4 the next generation model should be as fast as 80% of a snapdragon 800 with gpu more powerful than hd4400 (for 2d). Throw in a 64gb micro-sd card and you have a pretty decent though limited streaming system that can probably handle 4k video.
