Was going to post this in the MTG thread, but it's more relative here. I think I will actually have to agree with Tulsi on this on. Bomb thrower MTG going to make legislation nearly impossible the way she's making her power plays.

GOP in disarray! MTG bashes Tulsi Gabbard over George Santos interview | Salon.com

Yes, and she does the classic bothsides routine:

"Tulsi, I can say the same thing about the Democrats," Santos responded. "Look at Joe Biden. Joe Biden has been lying to the American people for 40 years. He's the president of the United States. Democrats resoundingly support him. Do they have no shame?"

Like another poster tried to do upthread. I just ignore these people.

I have to stick with him being ‘Jew-ish’ as my favorite.

Which is an old line, I think. Either it's an existing joke or Paul Kaye (himself Jewish, I think?) made it up when doing his "Dennis Pennis" thing (he asked Whoopie Goldberg if she was really a Jew or was just "Jew-ish"). Quite apropos at the moment considering the bizarre nonsense Goldberg has been coming out with (doubling down on her nutty claim that the Holocaust 'wasn't about race' 'it was white people killing white people').

(I don't know that I agree that Goldberg's comments are exactly anti-semitic, though they are tasteless and insensitive in their crass failure to understand what anti-semtiism, and race, even, actually are, so much so that it might as well be anti-Semitism)

Off-topic, but that "are you a Jew or just Jew-ish" line stuck in my head...Dennis Pennis was a brilliant creation...also was a sign of Robin Williams's greatness that he was the only celeb who instantly came back with a great response)

The Atlantic has a good analysis by Steve Israel, former Democratic Rep from Long Island.

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/a...opy-link&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=share

Going by this Atlantic article, it sounds like even though the Democrats had some knowledge that Santos’s resume was bullshit, nobody was taking him or the race very seriously at first. The previous rep from the district, Tom Suozzi, beat Santos by 12 points in 2020. And he hadn’t bothered to do much opposition research. By the time the race tightened, the DCCC did do oppo research, and still nobody, including the voters were really paying attention to the district and what was going on.

Unreal!. Lesson learned hopefully. Take these grifters seriously. The Republicans don't care this guy was a total fraud/criminal.

Moar lies from rep. Dirt Bag.

CNN’s KFile uncovered more falsehoods from Santos, including claims he was forced to leave a New York City private school when his family’s real estate assets took a downturn and stating he represented Goldman Sachs at a top financial conference where he berated the company for investing in renewables.

CNN also reviewed more instances of Santos providing additional false history of his family’s background. In one interview, Santos said his mother’s family’s historical Jewish name was “Zabrovsky,” and later appeared to operate a GoFundMe campaign for a pet charity (which he falsely claimed was a 501(c)(3) nonprofit) under that alias. Genealogists CNN previously spoke with found no evidence of Jewish or Ukrainian heritage in his family tree.

In another, he said his mother, whose family has lived in Brazil since the late 1800s, was a White immigrant from Belgium.

Because that is how you "pad your resume," by making up fake family names and telling elaborate stories about berating Goldman Sachs for "investing in renewables." Notice how he manages to make himself the villain in his own fantasies?

This is just eating at me more. I can't even volunteer to help clean up the lunch room at my kids elementary school without a background check.

We recently found out that the secret service was compromised with a foreign agent.

We now have at least a couple candidates running for GOP seats that can't even tell you who they worked for.

And no one cares.

These are people allowed access to national security and allowed to create and control foreign and domestic policy.

We have no guardrails preventing the installation of a foreign asset.

What's that all about?

I could only find this

Santos' official campaign website states: "George's work ethic comes from his mother, who came from nothing, but worked her way up to be the first female executive at a major financial institution.

"On September 11, 2001, George's mother was in her office in the South Tower. She survived the horrific events of that day, but unfortunately passed away a few years later."

CBS News quoted a pastor, Father Jose Carlos da Silva, of Saint Rita's Catholic Church, in Long Island City, Queens, on Thursday, who said he knew Santos' family well. After Santos' mother, Fatima Devolder, died in 2016, Santos told da Silva that the family couldn't afford a funeral, CBS reported.

So she died 15 years after 911? Is there any proof she was actually in the building at the time of the attack?

Reminds me of the Curb Your Enthusiasm bit when someone is said to have 'died on 9/11', because they were killed in an unrelated car crash at the other end of the city on the same day.

'no, I meant the day September 11th killed my mom. She did die in 2016 though.'

Federal prosecutor's are investigating his finances...

CBS News: Congressman-elect George Santos faces federal investigation after admitting to lying on resume.

Sadly, this is the only saving grace here that could keep him out of congress. His finances. There’s nothing in NY election laws that prohibits general lying or a lack of character. There are a few specific lies that can violate election law, like age, citizenship or residency. The people of his district voted him in. This should have been a campaign issue but now that the election’s over, the only thing to do is to add it to the pile of evidence that Trump Republicans tell untold amount of lies. Duh! Plus ...With GOP control of the House in the next Congress, fat chance they do anything about this guy, especially with Santos supporting McCarthy’s bid for Speaker. He needs every bit of support he can get, even if it’s from a criminal conman.

We do not want to have a system where elected officials can be disqualified for 'lying' outside of a few VERY narrow exceptions like you state. Otherwise the obvious outcome will be that the people in power will eventually decide people who defeat them are 'lying'.

What possible plausible theory of action would have the 9/11 attacks give her cancer a decade + later? She wasn't a first responder, she wasn't part of the crews that worked at ground zero, she was an office worker who, since she survived, clearly evacuated her office before the towers collapsed and should have been far away by then. I don't see why the same logic wouldn't apply to basically anyone in lower Manhattan that day.

Also just realized another important thing about Santos' mom is he CLAIMED she was an office worker there on 9/11. That could absolutely be a lie too.

Yeah .... The general principle is that the only thing the corrects this sort of lying to get elected is the next election.

He’s going to be seated, he’s not going to resign in shame, and there’s nowhere near the 2/3 majority of the House ready to expel him. The only way he ends up ejected from the House is if he’s convicted, (not just indicted) but convicted of financial irregularities. At that point he’d come under tremendous pressure from House Republican leadership to resign (although what does he owe them?), and if he didn’t resign, there would be, most likely enough votes to expel. Because they wouldn’t want him used as a Democratic talking point on their no vote to expel a criminal in their own reelections.

If the Republicans are OK with someone lying this much to get elected, there is nothing stopping someone who actually supports the democrat's policies from lying like this, getting elected with an R after their name, and then voting with the Democrats on everything. And vice versa. Years ago, and today there are reports of "stealth candidates", particularly in School Board elections, where right-wing religious candidates conceal their true beliefs in order to get elected, and then vote on the board based on their religious beliefs, with the intent of transforming the public school system.

With everything he's lied about .... I just think he's a serial liar who lost track of all his lies.

If the Republicans are OK with someone lying this much to get elected, there is nothing stopping someone who actually supports liberal policies from lying like this, getting elected with an R after their name, and then voting with the Democrats on everything. And vice versa. Also it's a blue district so if he quits or is booted Democrats are likely to win the special election. The Republican majority is already so thin I imagine they would try very hard not to reduce it further.

Why is it that officials are not required to pass a secret or top secret security check? Same here… You cant even join the national guard with the slightest ink on that paper… But running for office? No problem.

Because it would be unconstitutional and also a bad idea. You do not want the current government determining who is eligible to run against them outside of the absolute minimum requirements. Like do you really think Trump would have paused for one second if he learned he could disqualify opponents by saying they couldn't qualify for a security clearance?

There was a time when this scale of almost unimaginable mendacity would force a guy like Santos to immediately quit public life in shame. This is not that time.
Trump's one genuine political insight is that most political problems can be avoided through shameless lying.

It caught up to Trump in the end but as far as a single election goes it seems to work just fine.

Yea that makes sense. Its really an indictment of society at large that someone like that is able edge through. But again that surely is why money flows and full disclosure, transparency, is a mandatory property of said system. I mean otherwise it sounds like its already corrupted.
