Most definitely worth the upgrade, especially for productivity. You're looking at 2.5x to 3.0x the MT performance, so highly threaded apps will benefit greatly.

For gaming, it depends on the title. Older games or ones that depend more on single threaded performance won't see much of an upgrade. More modern titles that can take advantage of the extra cores and threads will run much better on the 2700X.

The IPC difference favors Ryzen still quite a bit, a 2500k will see an across the board improvement moving to 2600x and up.

Indeed, but I was comparing it to a 2500K @ 4.4GHz, not at stock.

Here is an example of a 2600K @ 4.7GHz performing similarly to the overclocked Ryzen 5/7 chips, at least in the lightly threaded games:

A 4.4GHz 2500K wouldn't be too far off a 4GHz Ryzen in pure ST performance. MT performance on the other hand is a 2.5 - 3.0x improvement!

In most reviews I've seen there is a pretty substantial gap in modern titles between 2500k and 2600k, the hyperthreading and cache differences make it I think. So IMO its not fair to swap a 2500k as equivalent to a 2600k (for example: https://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/2773-intel-i5-2500k-revisit-benchmark-for-2017/page-2)
