Well, if you want to look at it from that standpoint... AMD sees 92 percent drop in income.

"For the quarter ended July 1, Sunnyvale, California-based (NYSE:AMD - news) said on Thursday that net income fell 92 percent to $17.4 million, or 5 cents a share, from $207.1 million, or 61 cents, in the year ago period."

So, yeah... It sucks compared to a year ago. But no more for Intel, than most any other high tech corporation.

The fact that Intel did beat estimates is very encouraging. Same with the fact that "Earnings are expected to climb to 14 cents and revenue to $7.06 billion in the fourth quarter, according to First Call."

(Again, my point was not to bash AMD's earnings, but to just point out that the market as a whole is down from 12 months ago. But I don't think that's news to anyone, even us "poodles".)

I knew you would put in your 2cents.

Yes, Intel killed the estimates that were out there for the quarter. All day today, the so-called expert anal-ysts were saying that "Intel will definitely miss estimates". So this ought to shut up a few of them. And at least Intel gives truthful earnings guidance, unlike another certain company which continually beat its chest and proclaimed "We are not lowering our guidance numbers", only to have to eat crow a couple weeks later and pre-warn of lower earnings, and then even miss that guidance number when all was said and done.

All in all, it was a pretty good quarter for Intel. Despite how bad the economy is, they sure shipped a lot of processors. A big decrease in margin (due to big price cuts) was the only thing that kept this from being an even better quarter.

But where the real reduction in revenue for the quarter can be found is in revenues realized from equity investments. For the same quarter (Q2) in 2000, Intel made over $2.1B off of their investment portfolio. For Q2 2001, Intel made only $3M.

When this is taken in to consideration, if Intel had made a similar number off of their investments as last year, their total revenues for Q2 2001 would have been almost equal to that of Q2 2000.

Hate to Intel Bash, but that is my job

AMDzone
"*ntel just claimed that their marketshare was maintained for quarter 2 and that CPU shipments were up 6%. They claim they will gain marketshare in the 2nd half. Are they lying? I wouldn't put it past them."

From what I can tell Intel has flooded the market to beat estimates. According to AMD, they(AMD) gained marketshare as the overall market was shrinking. Makes you wonder. Anyways, I still gotta give it to Intel for being able to keep their stock value up, can't say the same for AMD.

Oh look ...

... one revenue statement - another revenue statement.

Someone decided to pour gasoline over this ... oh look - alght matches ... hmm ... fire, flame ...

Geez ppl - it's revenue.

Intel beat the analysts (they're human too - despite claims to the contrary). It's not as if analysts have never been wrong before. One way or the other, let's just hoep that this stupid hole should be over soon (which I think/hope it will be rather soon) & get back to work .

My 2 pence...

I thought more Athlons were shipped last quarter than Pentium 4s. That can't be good for Intel's market share. Their pentium 3 1 GHz is still their top seller I think.

<< I thought more Athlons were shipped last quarter than Pentium 4s >>

I believe that was the case since the P4 didn't really have too much market time while the Athlons have been out for a long while. We'll see what happens during the upcoming school shopping season to see if sales increase for both companies. It better because my AMD is back down to what I purchased it for.

Better think again, flooding the market is not any way to meet, let alone beat, estimates. According to the info from my broker via their analyst J. Joseph (and also confirmed by Ashok Kumar at Piper Jaffrey) BOTH companies have recently upped their production, Intel by 6%, and AMD by 7.7%, due to increased demand, as most OEMs have worked off their inventory. But if you wanna really examine whether one company is flooding the market, all you have to do is look at the grey market. It is no coincidence that the grey market in AMD CPUs is several times larger than that of Intel CPUs. And if you think that is necessarily good, rethink it yet again. That grey market is what is really the most responsible for the extremely low AMD pricing. But there is an end to this in sight, both AMD and Intel have said that they are going to tighten up their pricing.

As for AMD/Intel marketshare %ages, it's definitely stabilized at ~ 25%/75% overall. Units shipped by each company offers a decent check for this.
