"Lower price. The top-of-the-line iPod, holding 10,000 songs (40 gigs, as geeks will tell you), now costs $399. The lower-capacity model, with room for 5,000 songs (20 gigs), costs $299. That's a $100 price reduction for each. (There's no more 15-gig model.)"

New features include:

- Click wheel (like the iPod Mini)
- A millimeter thinner
- More efficient Menus
- Multiple on-the-go playlists
- Listen to audiobooks slower or 25 percent faster without affecting pitch
- Longer play - 12 hours of battery life due to more power conservation
- Lower price: 40GB - $399, 20GB $299 (no 15 gig model now)
- Still white

A 60GB model has been rumored to fill the $499 price point soon.

Was thinking the same thing. I have a 3G 20GB and thought about getting the 4G 40GB model instead. But then I realized that I probably wouldn't get more than $275 for it since the new 4G 20GB version is only $299. Then I'd have to pay at least another $100 to get the 4G 40GB model which would then mean that I would pay about $475+ for it. Not worth it.

Apple hasn't even get their act together on the ipod minis have they? They seem widely out of stock!

I don't understand why they went to the click wheel (I've never used an ipod mini so bare with me), does that mean you have to press the buttons now and they aren't touch sensitive? Also is it just me or is a 20 gig minimum becoming too big? I'd rather they continue with smaller drives for a smaller ipod and a lower cost.

I think the problem here is that demand for the mini is so great they're having trouble manufacturing them. Rumor has it that Hitachi's 4GB microdrive, the same thing in the Nomad Muvo2, is what sits inside the mini. Hitachi is having trouble cranking out these drives faster than Apple needs minis on-hand.

keep in mind I have yet to use one, but from what i've heard, the wheel is still a "wheel" put you can also "click" it by pressing at one of those locations.

Yes, that's exactly what it is like. It's great, because you fingers never need to leave the wheel! It saves a lot of time. If you want to see what it is like, go to any store that has a Mini on display.

It's actually a touch/click wheel. Its pretty cool. Right now I have the 3G and its a bit annoying to "one-hand" it because I have to shift my thumb way up to go backwards. With everything on the wheel, it should be a lot easier to navigate... Now if only I could find a way to trade my 3G 40GB for a 4G 40GB

What might be an even better deal is 3d gen iPods after the anouncement tomorrow....Apple sells stuff from the immediate-past-generation-but-still-new producs at a discount. Go to http://store.apple.com after the announcement, and see what they have listed in the "Hot Deals" section. They might have refurbed 3rd Gen 40 giggers for a great price, and Apple refurbs have the same warranty as new products.

Or, if you want to wait, its known that Apple placed an order for 300,000 (or something) 60 gig drives with the same form factor as those that go in the iPod. I believe the next Apple expo is in Europe in the first week of August. It also makes sense because right now they are lacking a high end (price) iPod.
