Warhammer: Age of Reckoning (WAR) might just prove to be a hit. We'll see.

I'm personally hoping that Huxley shapes up to be a hit. It's an MMOFPS with RPG elements, mind you. But that's closer to the kind of thing I like.

And maybe Guild Wars 2 will be a closer resemblance to an MMO. Guild Wars was enjoyable, and is closer to what I like in an RPG, because its very much like a Diablo/NWN-style game put into an faux-MMO shell. But the promise of truly persistent worlds will be a nice addition to the Guild Wars world.

Expect World of second-job-you-pay-to-do-craft to be on top for years to come.

WoW isn't going anywhere. While there are probably some pretty great MMO's scheduled to come out very soon (and I admit WAR looks like fun), there isn't anything that is going to touch WoW in popularity any time soon. The game that does that is going to have to be pretty damn good, as WoW already has a huge fan base with plenty of people that invested months of /played time into their characters. WoW is still gaining in popularity, and a new game that replaces it would have to be a very decent improvement (such that people were willing to leave their decked out WoW characters).

WoW has plenty of problems, and I can see people who are only interested in PvP leaving for things like WAR. However, the amount of people that play WoW just for PvP are fairly low (they exist, but they aren't the main part of the user base).

Just play WoW. You might as well start now so you can be at or close to level 70 when the next xpac comes out and kills the competition for at least another 6 months.

Conan will be bigger then you think simply because there are a lot of adults who grew up playing EQ, AC, ultima and would be looking for a great new MMORPG. I tried WoW couldn't get into it. I'm not sure I have time for these types of games anymore but I think I will be trying out Conan.

That being said nothing will come close to the size of WoW if ever... I'm not sure Blizzard could repeat that feat.

However Conan will be the next hit MMORPG.

Does the number of players in all other MMOs live currently even come close to WoW's numbers?

I think WAR and AoC will be decent, i hope to try them both. The MMO genre is very interesting to me, the whole virtual world idea, persistance and all.

As wow becomes out dated, it will keep a lot of support just from the fact it's a MMO that can run on crappy low end systems.

Personally, i think Darkfall will be the next big thing if it ever gets out of the vaporware stage (and doesn't get canceled completely).

Dispite what everyone is saying, AoC and WAR look like WoW clones. However if either gets rid of the grind that has driven me out of every MMO i've tried so far then it might have some hope.

This is the million dollar question isn' it? Or is it a billion dollar question?

IMO, none of the officially announced upcoming MMO's are going to make the cut. A couple of them might be more successful than previous MMO's which have tried, but I don't predict any major impacts.

AoC and then WAR. Wether either can top WoW or not is another question open for debate. WoW is one of those anomalies in gaming IMO. As far as subscriber numbers go I dont think anything will top it for a while.

The warhammer one will be a mild success.

Doesnt Lineage already have more subscribers than WoW?

But seriously in the US its going to take another Blizzard MMO to break the stranglehold WoW has on its pop.

A lot of people are wondering if AoC or WAR will have a big impact on WoW. I wonder if these opinions are fueled more by what both games are claiming to offer or if they are fueled because there really hasn't been anything better announced for the future yet.

I really think the only thing that is going to have a 'big' impact on WoW will be WoW 2 or some other Blizzard MMO. And let's be fair, what does 'big' really mean when you have a gazillion subs? If AoC and WAR steal even 500K subscribers in total from WoW I will be shocked.

And as already stated in this thread, hardware will become a factor with these two games. I can run WoW just fine but doubt I could run AoC at 800x600 based on the specs I've seen. Neither one of those games inspires me enough to upgrade just to try a new experience when I already enjoy the WoW experience.

I never knew anything about AoC. Finally read up about it just now, and I have this to say: about damn time people look to make an MMORPG that doesn't use the D&D dice-roll aspect (or will it still for damage?) and the hotkey and click for combat system, coupled with wait times. I always hated that and is the sole reason almost all MMORPG's completely turn me off.

It depends on what you define a "big" MMO as. Will any game in the near future have big, 10 million+ numbers? Not a chance. However, that is not to say that any game that comes out in the foreseeable future will be a flop. AoC and War would be more than happy with 1/20th of what WoW has for subscription numbers, and honestly if either can get that many I would consider them very successful.

Aside from that, I never see Darkfall become a "Big" game. It has a lot of promised features but even if it delivers on half of them, which I think it won't, it will still only appeal to a very small, hardcore enthusiast group, and might erk out 100,000 subscribers. Guild Wars 2 will defiantly have some great success thanks to its already established fan base and no monthly fee for playing online, same goes for Stargate Online, minus the no monthly fee part.
