Best part is that the E36 M3 had this huge iron I6 in it, iirc. WWwwaaayy to heavy for 240 hp. You could drop a massive aluminum V8 in, save 80-120 pounds and fly like the devil. Amazing.
I do not think that is true with the new M3's though. =]

Amen. Much much too heavy for just 333hp.

At least you can drive a Corvette in the rain, through hot weather since it has an A/C, and there's actually music to listen to when you're driving.
Even on Top Gear, the CTS-V pwned the Audi S4 which in turn pwned the M3..though it was the non CSL version.. I imagine the V and CSL would be pretty close on a track.

Well I don't think we are considering convenience when you are talking about a 600HP car either the M3 CSL is for hardcore BMW lovers, as same as Thinkpads for Big Blue Diehards such as myself LOL. The M3 CSL is made that way to save every bit of weight in it and that's the only way to do it.
ps : If you remember the TopGear episode then you also remember that the M3 CSL was 0.001 seconds away from pwning the porsche 911 Turbo GT2

The C6 Z06 would destroy the M3 CSL in pretty much any course. Though the CSL is impressive compared with the normal M3, it's still 360hp, 273 lb/ft torque at 3050 lbs. The only real advantage the CSL has over the Z06 is the motorsport tires.

Okay, BMW's 5L V10 weighs in at 530LBs, the Z06 7L V8 at 450. Both about 500HP. Get BMW to shave 80LBs and shrink the width to fit in the M3. I'm sure with all thier technological superiority they can out do a piece of antiquated technology from an inferior company that should just die, right? They should be able to make one for around the $65-85k range that the Z06 and Viper go for. Shouldn't be too hard. Should it?

Exactly. The M3's engine is very close to the dimensions and weight of the LS7 already. Unless you're (Linuxator) talking about something as useless as hp per liter, the M3's engine doesn't really have much practical size difference.

A 1998 328's (2.8L) engine weighs in at about 400LBs.
