The M3 has gone from 240hp, to 333hp, and supposedly will hit 400hp with the new one.

M5's have gone from 310hp to 400hp in the last gen M5, to the current gen M5 of 507.

So that's 240-->333-->400, and 310-->400hp-->507 with each succeeding generation.

What we expect next, 500hp M3 and 600hp M5??

The USDM E36 M3 needed more power, frickin Germans got the Double VANOS motors putting out something like 320HP.... 320HP in an E36? I'm game!

But 240, damn thing would get beat out by a V6 altima ok maybe not, but I'm just bitter about not getting the real deal, what we got was so watered down

We Americans always get the watered down imported cars.

My friend has an E36 M3 (1998), and 240 hp is MORE THAN ENOUGH. That thing is incredible.

Quite possibly the most perfect car I've ever driven.

No way, 240 is weak sauce

I dunno about that. IMO it gives the car a near-perfect balance. It admittedly isn't going to win a drag race with a ZO6, but the E36 has incredible handling, great steering and braking feel, and a relatively comfy ride. I guess it's a matter of your priorities, but as an all-around road car I don't see 240 bhp, as implemented in the E36 M3, as too little.

You need a turbocharged\supercharged 4-5.5 liter or a large, ~7 liter V-8 to produce 500 hp and a turbocharged\supercharged 6-7 liter V8 or V12 to produced over 600 hp.

Slam an LS7 in a Z3 and lets have a party

Note: the LS7 weighs in at about 450LBs (complete, fully dressed, w/ clutch). BMW's "small six" weighs in at 390.

The E36 just feels slow and it's due to the low hp. Yes, the handling, braking, and steering feel great, but due to the low power, they really don't have a lot to put up with. I don't see why an all around road car, can't have more horsepower and still be implemented well. Then again, BMW feels that it isn't enough and has been upping with each generation with success and without loss of braking, steering, and handling.

Uh, no. The Ferrari F430 gets 490 bhp from a normally-aspirated 4.3L V-8, and the M5 gets 507 bhp from a normally-aspirated 5.0L V-10.

I personally think the recent horsepower wars have to stop, or at least slow, eventually. Traction control systems are the main reason carmakers are able to produce such powerful road cars, but there's still the issue of where one can productively use that kind of power. Even an E36 M3, with "only" 240 bhp, is largely wasted on American, British, or Japanese roads, and these markets make up a large share of the total potential audience for these cars. Also, fuel costs are getting burdensome even for people of means, particularly if they aren't enjoying any real-world benefit from having 400-600 bhp.

Amen. Much much too heavy for just 333hp.

0-60 in ~5 seconds is not slow by anyone's standards.

No we got to keep it fair, the 850 CSI isn't an M series, it's not tuned for racing, plus it's as heavy as hell, so we need supercharger in the 850 CSI to balance things out personally I don't care that much about HorsePower I am not a formula 1 driver nor I would like to get my license suspended after two months from me getting the speedy car, give me a Black 850 CSI non-tuned nothing else and that's a car that I would like to die in

850 CSI Check the videos of this car on the Autobhan doing insane speeds just one day before the speed limit was imposed !!!!

Just shut up and drop a Chevy V8 into it.

Best part is that the E36 M3 had this huge iron I6 in it, iirc. WWwwaaayy to heavy for 240 hp. You could drop a massive aluminum V8 in, save 80-120 pounds and fly like the devil. Amazing.
I do not think that is true with the new M3's though. =]
