Well the foundry that both amd and nvidia both use has recently said that the new 40nm process is delayed till the middle of next year due to a big dropoff in orders.
I presume when you are saying "next-gen" you mean the top of the line performance type cards. As opposed to the lower ranked cards that get sold in much greater volumes.
For nvidia, there are hints emerging of a 55nm GT200 shrink which will look like a G80 in size, they have inventory problems so the 55nm product might be slip streamed into their current range or might release a 280+. There has been no leaks on random chinese websites yet so looks at least a month. Also there is the GT206 round christmas which is supposed to replace the GTX260, speculation is that it is a more RV770 type part. Finally GT212 at 40nm in the middle of the year.
For amd looks like RV870 on 40nm in the middle of next year. The TSMC delay has probably effected their schedule as well, but it seems unlikely they will create an intermediate 55nm performance part. More likely to concentrate on mobile parts for the time being.
