Walmart has Nextbook 7" tablet with Google Play access for $69 in select stores or online. May 5-11.

•1GB DDR3 of system memory and 8GB on-board storage memory (expandable with microsd)
•7.0" touchscreen, 800 x 480 resolution
•Built-in 802.11b/g/n WiFi
•1080p HD video playback
•USB 2.0 port, Micro-USB 2.0 port, mini-HDMI port, 3.5mm jack

Seems like a great price for a basic tablet.

Anyone have any feedback on this tablet?

My Mom is looking to get my Dad a basic 7" tablet for playing basic games.

Thoughts?

The reviews on Walmart's website are pretty good. 84% said they would buy it again, and it looks like most of them paid $79 or more. Take it for what it's worth...

This guy didn't think it was worth $99, stated some issues with gestures, poor battery life, bad camera, etc...

Of the many budget Android tablets currently on the market, this is not the one you should buy.I’m short on time today, but I wanted to get out a brief review of this tablet. There aren’t any other reviews posted (not that I’ve found anyway), and I’d like to offer a first hand view of this device so you can better make your buying decision.
I’ve had this tablet for a week and I can say from first hand experience that it has several issues that should give you pause. While they’re not major defects, they do cause this tablet to come up short against the Polaroid PMID701, IdolPad, or the Innosoul.

That's just one review though, and it's also $30 cheaper now though.

Buying somebody an intro device to new tech and going cheap is I think a bad move. I would aim for Nook or Kindle quality at a minimum.

I was thinking the same thing after reading the reviews. I want to get my mom a tablet with at least the ability to use google play, but at the same time I don't want to give her something she will get frustrated with and stop using.

Kindle Fire is more than twice as much, but if they have Amazon Prime and buy CDs from Amazon it's a great choice.

The cloud player for music works very well for me, even 30' away from my router. Netflix and Amazon video streaming also work well, and ebook reading too. I have the first-gen Fire and an e-ink Kindle, and I usually use the Fire for reading books just because it's handy.

The drawback is for games you have to get them from the Amazon store instead of Google store, unless you're savvy enough to side-load. (Rooting is not needed, you just need to go into settings and change a security setting to allow it.)

Yeah, the Kindle Fire is by far my favorite device I've ever bought, even without being rooted.

A while back I bought a refurbed first gen kindle for $150 and put jellybean on it. The whole process is automated these days, you basically just plug it into your computer and press go lol. The custom roms are really clean now (I'm on jandycane at the moment).

This does have Google navigation GPS if you have a mobile data plan you can attach it to. It does maps and driving instructions without that.

It comes with nook app and Kindle android one works so I have both libraries on it.

It has a net nanny browser if you have children accessing it.

Watch ESPN works fine.

Haven't set up the cloud stuff yet. That has printing, credit card processing, easy sign, office suite, remote desktop and more.

800x480 kills the deal. Heck that is the resolution of my 2 year old phone that I just replaced because its resolution was too low (at only 4.3 inches).

1024 x 600 would be the minimum I would want at 7 inches.

My Walmart gave me a $20 gift card because, despite all the Walmart inventory tracking systems agreeing that these were available at 4 or more stores in town, nobody could find them in any store. My order for store pickup was canceled by Walmart. Walked in the next day and suddenly they were available.

So, for $49 for me, a deal.

So far, so good. See post #11. Put the TiVo app on it and use it as an additional remote and to view channel guide without messing up what I'm currently viewing.

I'm not real picky with these things. Where someone here might say OMG it took 37.5 seconds to boot, I don't really care . As long as it works as advertised, I'm fine.

I did notice that Walmart now has the NEXT8p12 for $69. 8", uses flash, 800 x 600 resolution.

Remember, for the same price, you can have the original Nook Color, which when rooted, with CyanogenMod, will perform better and look better, minus the camera. Possibly, so will the original Kindle Fire.

Hrm. I wish they listed GPS capability on these things, because that's what I'm looking for.

Go to any marine store and you'll find a GPS chartplotter for $300-$600 dollars. One of these with the MX Marine app are just as good, if not better.

Gave it a shot and ended up returning it the next day. The build quality seemed fairly good for the price but the reason it was returned was because the microphone did not work (did not record sound on any app). Also, there was a humming sound that, if i didn't know better, sounded like a mechanical HDD... perhaps it had to do with the defective microphone. The Skype app was super sluggish as well and that may have caused me to return it after playing with it more but because of the mic problem i didn't want to even go through the hassle of exchanging to give it more time. The screen was also a bit grainy looking and could have been brighter.

On the positive side, netflix and youtube seemed to work well if not slightly sluggish at first. It seemed to work well as a PC control with the touchpad app. Also the sound volume was more than sufficient compared to some devices.

Overall, it looked and felt of much higher quality than i expected for $70 and it might be great for someone who hasn't been spoiled by higher power devices or for a disposable device you don't care gets used a bit rougher.

Did they have a display model?
Good enough for an 8 year old to play games like Temple Run, etc?

1.They didn't when I bought mine.
2. Just for you I downloaded Temple Run 2 and it looked good and played without a hitch.

A lot of people use phones with lesser specs than these (and a much smaller screen too!) and are happy with the experience/performance. So how bad can it be really?

whats the sound quality like? have you tried hooking it to a decent stereo?

It makes sounds and plays music and gets loud enough for me and sounds fine to me but, no, I haven't tried hooking it to a decent stereo. I don't think I ever would. It's a $69 tablet, not high-end audio equipment.
