This will allow you to use your monitor as an HDTV, as long as it supports the proper modes.

As far as what you could use it for... If you subscribe to digital cable, the cable co will bring you out a HDTV reciever so you can watch those cool shows in HDTV. Xbox games are HDTV, as are some PS2 and GameCube.

This is best combined with older, cheaper computer projectors. 640x480 projector + this = 75" or greater 480p HDTV for pennies on the dollar.

I've delt with MWAVE for years. Good service and prompt delivery. Interesting deal, but I'm watching the price of big screen HDTVs drop like a rock.

so this doesn't appear to actually be an HDTV tuner - it's a SDTV tuner that multplies the # of lines to get HDTV-like quality.

fuzzy's right - the product page for the N6 says that to get HDTV quality it has to be connected into an HDTV set-top box. It's not a decoder. Not for this price.

not HD... LOL... my mistake

I must be doing something wrong with my life, not being able to keep up with the latest technology/price.

I'd like to get some hot deals on how to get more than just 33$/hour, please...

For those people who have 19" LCD monitors, this would be the perfect addition.

Am I missing something or is this not all that useful at all unless you have a strong desire to keep your computer turned off, else you can just buy a video card that does the same and more?

I really doubt the quality of the pictures at 1280X1024, since original signal is at low res

What this product appears to be is an NTSC TV tuner and scaler. The tuner is useful if, for example, you were thinking of buying one of those wildly overpriced LCD TV sets you see at Best Buy. Instead of getting a 17" LCD TV for $1200, you could buy a 17 or 19" computer LCD screen and this gadget for less.

Secondly, as a scaler, it could improve the quality of your analog sources (VHS tapes, laserdisc, etc) by de-interlacing and filtering. Expensive scalers are supposed to work wonders with these sources, though I doubt a cheapo one like this would give you such wonderful results. I'm not rushing to buy this gizmo.

This will allow you to use your monitor as an HDTV, as long as it supports the proper modes.
You can purchase a Fusion HD tuner card for $150 that will tune HDTV, NTSC, and has S-Video inputs, etc.

If you're really that desperate to input progressive component inputs to your VGA monitor, you can purchase a transcoder for alot less than that too.

You sure about the PS2 and GC. I have yet to see their HD adapters. I know xbox does. I have one. No games in 1080i. 3 or 4 of them are in 720p. Halo is 480p. THPS4 is 720p. The old cartoony game..forgot the name is in 1080i.

Good point!
I've a PS2, only very few games support HD res. (Tekken4, afaik).

Geez, and you would think some of these people actually know what they're talking... (or is this forum filled with dream shoppers?)

Like Shloime said, it's possible to turn your LCD monitor into an inexpensive TV.

Since most LCD monitors have just one optimal resolution, people with 18" and 19" should be looking into this.

Trasncoder and a TV card are still cheaper.

I don't think there are any HD PS2 games- some of them are progressive scan, but just a handfull. XBox has a few HD games, but almost all of them are progressive scan. I heard Matrix for the XBox supports 1080i/720p/480p.

This unit is a standalone TV tuner and a low end scaler (scales video inputs to resolutions upwards of 1280x1024). That's it. It has nothing to do with HDTV. However, it's a reasonably good choice for watching TV on your front projector for the price.

You can get a software called Dscaler for free off the web that might do the same thing. I use it instead of my pinnacle pc software for watching tv and it looks tons better with Dscaler. I also play my Xbox through the svideo input of my tuner card with Dscaler and it looks better than using the packaged sofware. http://deinterlace.sourceforge.net/

Dscaler would do the same thing as the N5. The N6 OTOH, is capable of decoding a true HDTV signal. Which would make Dscaler unnecessary.
