This will allow you to use your monitor as an HDTV, as long as it supports the proper modes.

As far as what you could use it for... If you subscribe to digital cable, the cable co will bring you out a HDTV reciever so you can watch those cool shows in HDTV. Xbox games are HDTV, as are some PS2 and GameCube.

This is best combined with older, cheaper computer projectors. 640x480 projector + this = 75" or greater 480p HDTV for pennies on the dollar.

You sure about the PS2 and GC. I have yet to see their HD adapters. I know xbox does. I have one. No games in 1080i. 3 or 4 of them are in 720p. Halo is 480p. THPS4 is 720p. The old cartoony game..forgot the name is in 1080i.

I know that the GC and PS2 have some games that run in 480p. Not sure of higher resolutions.

And, the Xbox does have games in 1080i. Two, to be exact: Dragons Lair 3d and Enter the Matrix.

Dscaler would do the same thing as the N5. The N6 OTOH, is capable of decoding a true HDTV signal. Which would make Dscaler unnecessary.

Are you sure about that. The N6 doesn't say that it can decode digital HD signals. The difference between the N5 and N6 that I noticed was the final output resolution N5: 1024 x 768 and N6: 1280 x 1024. Both are just hardware resolution scalers with built in analog tuner.

HDTV can be misleading, but for those who do not understand all the different HDTV specifications I wrote a page on my website explaining the major protocols.

All that matters right now, is that 720p is the best (1080i is an interlaced picture).

Really? What tuner chip did they replace the FI1236MK2 chip (standard definitely only, same chip as VB50HRTV, and N5) in the N6 with? That makes the N6 an absolute steal at this price then.

There's a large difference between being able to play EDTV and HDTV video streams from the component inputs and being able to tune and decode OTA HDTV channels.

I never said that the N6 can tune HDTV channels. But, unless Nextvision is out-and-out lying on their spec sheet, it can play EDTV and HDTV video streams on the component inputs. Turning your cheap VGA projector into an expensive HDTV.

Remember, most HDTVs lack HDTV tuners out of the box also.

OMG you people, I posted this thread not to get all technical but to give an alternative to people who hate watching distorted TV from their $50 TV card. :Q

I was waiting for the N6 to come down in price so I can use my VG191 as a TV even when the computer was turned off.

Yes, that was my biggest selling point because it gets rid of all the cumbersome software and having to listen to your computer fan while watching TV.

I was carefully watching the price go down ever since it came out priced at $399.

I thought it was a steal at $250 but now I'm so confused by all the mumble jumble.

I really dont care about HDTV, I just want to watch TV@ 1280x1024 on my 1280x1024 native viewsonic, since not even high-end plasma displays can do that.

I never knew watching TV could be this difficult.

A viewsonic tuner box that works without your computer on is sold for around a hundred dollars...and u can have up to 1024x768 resolution or higher i believe....i know amazon sold it a few months ago, havent checked...you should look into that to see if will fit your needs.

I bought a HUGHES E86 DirecTv/OTA receiver from my local BestBuy for very cheap, it was open box and was missing the manual (downloadable) and was missing the RF antenna (no biggie) and came with the RF remote incase i want to buy the RF antenna down the line, price? $199.99 YMMV deal baby!

So yes! You can find some really good deals on a real "HDTV" decoder, and not some gizmo as NextVision N6 claims to be.

This is interesting:

Simply connect the NextVision N6 to your antenna or cable feed; or connect to your satellite, cable box or HDTV set-top-box and enjoy precision scaled HDTV on your display or projector.

simply connect to your satellite ??????? i dont think so

For the last time, the N6 is a transcoder, not a tuner. There is a huge difference. You plug N6 into computer monitor. You plug HDTV tuner into component jacks of N6. You have HDTV. Works the same with any HDTV video stream, plug in the component video jacks.

The N6 can tune standard analog TV video, but that's it. It cannot, nor does it claim to be able to tune HDTV. And $242 is a hot deal for this device, as most simple transcoders are over $100, and they can't do any scaling.

Yes, u can get the lower models for less than 100 dollars. The N6 can do PIP within the windows environment. So u can watching TV while u work or play.

But far more importantly, it can play a 480p/720p/1080i video stream. Nothing else I've seen on the market can do that.

I did a *LOT* of research on VGA adapters when searching for an HDTV option for my XBox back in December and this was clearly the best option that also offers a lot of flexibility connecting other peripherals and A/V components. The only drawback was the price, but $242 is very reasonable, as some of the plain component to VGA adapters cost as much.
