Thank you both any other suggestions?

I'd like to have my normal texts and texts with pictures in the same app/thread, what's the easiest and best free app to accomplish this? Or is hangouts sufficient?

IMO, Sliding Messaging is far and away the most aesthetically-pleasing of the third-party apps, BUT it is a little more glitchy than is probably tolerable for most. I get FCs when trying to add an image to a picture message; they crashes are pretty predictable but they're still annoying.

Any third-party app will be able to keep SMS (texts) and MMS (picture texts) in the same thread within itself; they should function exactly the same as the stock Messaging app in this regard.

What's the best easiest to use MMS third party app that's also free?

Give this a try:

8SMS is a good AOSP based messaging app if you want a replacement.

I personally haven't tried it but after looking for a simple no frills messenger with popup ability, I settled for the stock messenger in CM 10.2. Other than that I haven't found one that really replaces GoSMS. Yes, Go is spammy, but its features are solid. Sliding is slow and choppy and worse than GoSMS although it looks more promising. However, given the state of development with that dev, I feel like he's making little progress in speeding the app up.

So I may try 8SMS moving forward but I barely SMS now anyway

Sliding is slow and choppy

This was definitely the case when I first tried the app like 6 months ago but the dev has actually made some pretty significant performance improvements since then. I'm currently running it in the "Hangouts" UI and in no way is it slow or choppy (at least not any more than any other Android app). I've also tried the other UIs and those run fine as well. And this is on an old-ass Galaxy Nexus.

You're right this was how it was in April, but it's still not that great. There's still long loading times. I last tried the app in October on my Nexus 4. It literally takes 3 minutes to load a thread of 900 texts from one of my good friends.

Well,

Samsung is all about AMOLED tech, and basically the reviewer is comparing LCD tech to AMOLED. So yeah.

I myself really like AMOLED.

three kind of unrelated questions from me...

1. how long until we see AMOLED televisions? It's an amazing technology for video. Like, it has Plasma's black levels and even beats LCD's power consumption.

I don't know if this is necessarily AMOLED, but here is Samsung's OLED TV:

Price needs to come down a bit.

Integrating two totally different messaging systems that use different means of transport and have different billing patterns and which use different forms of user ID is a horrible idea.

Im just talking about gchat and sms. Apple does it just fine with imessage and sms.

Ah, there's the difference. I used to keep threads of thousands of messages as well until a pre-flash backup went horribly wrong and didn't restore properly. Since then, I've only had maybe 500 SMS/MMS messages from any one contact at a time which doesn't seem to bog down the app as much.

I've got mine and wanted to quickly comment on screen that I made a big deal out of in previous pages. Well, I am happy to report that my concern was unfounded. The screen looks gorgeous to me. It sucks that I don't have time to play with it at the moment but the improvement over the N4's screen is H-U-G-E. So the screen gets a resounding approval from me from the first glance.

How does the weight feel in your hand?

Our iPhone 4 feels like a freakin brick.

Got to play with a white one today. Looks nice, took a nice pic in low light on HDR mode, seemed pretty fast. I really like it actually.

In-hand feel is great but if I decide to keep it I will have no choice but to put on a case. Not only the soft-touch material pick up dirts, the gap between the front and back is slightly larger than that of the N4 and I can see dusts getting in. If you don't mind your phone getting "rugged" then I guess it doesn't matter either way.

My first impressions after finally getting the phone unlocked, rooted, and my apps installed and setup.

1080p looks really nice when browsing full desktop websites and reading smaller text, like theverge.com for example.

The Nexus 5 display seems too warm though. My whites look a little pinkish to me. Whites on my Nexus 4 look more white. Though it's not too bad, this won't bother me.

God, the phone feels really nice to hold. I love that plastic soft touch on the black model much more than the glass on my Nexus 4. And this is a phone I don't mind setting down on my desk without a case on and worrying the precious back will get scratched.

Less rattle. My Nexus 4 seems to rattles a little, supposedly from the camera. The Nexus 5 has a little rattle too, but not from the camera, seems to be the volume buttons this time. But it's overall less rattling when I set it down.

The speaker is an improvement over the Nexus 4, better location, it's louder and just sounds a bit better. It's just a single speaker, the other side has the mic probably.

Disappointed that Chrome doesn't use Immersive mode to hide the menu and nav bar for the ultimate full screen experience.

You want to hide the back button!?

Sure. I can swipe down or up from the edges to bring the buttons back quickly if I need to go back or to the home screen.

Though left and right edge swipes currently do nothing in Chrome, so that should really be the back and forward actions there.

Are any of you guys who have already received, have any manufacturing issues that are being reported by many over Xda. And it seems that almost all of them consistently have all or at least couple of following problems.

1) Bad Vibrator(the biggest problem & the reason may well have answered during the tear down of Nexus 5 by Ifixit, who have pointed out that the vibrator is attached to back panel with just a loose adhesive).

2) Stuck or dead pixels & Back-light bleed.

3) Bad or Muffled sound when volume is set to <50%

4) Back panel discoloration

Of those 4 issues listed I haven't had a single one of those issues.

Vibrator is working fine.
Screen looks great (normal minor back light bleeding).
Sound is okay for the speaker, doesn't seem to get bad or muffled past 50%.
My black back looks black, not seeing any discoloration (this complaint from white N5 owners?).

Ars Technica review is up.
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/11/nexus-5-review-flagship-hardware-for-half-the-price/

Anyone have a white one and care to comment on this bit?
We tested the black version of the Nexus 5 as opposed to the two-tone white version. While at first glance the only difference might seem to be the colors, the two phones actually use different types of plastic around the edge. The black version has a matte, soft touch plastic on the back and sides, but the white version uses glossy plastic for the sides and matte soft touch plastic for the back. We haven't gotten to play with the white glossy plastic version, but it probably feels like other glossy plastics (aka terrible).

I just got a G2 last week, and I can easily make it through a full day with my typical usage. (Usually 1.5 days)

I have none of those issues above.

My idle battery drainage might be the best I've ever seen.

Screen has been awesome

Very happy with the Camera.

I've said it a dozen times now, but I've been full of a little bit of regret for not waiting for the Nexus (I love the AOSP) but I'm more than happy with LG's skin and the quality overall of the G2 is just better.

None of the above for me.

No offense to anyone, but it seems like only now we're opening our eyes to how bad the N4's camera was. I hate to say it, but "I told ya so!" I can see how now we're talking about how much of an improvement the N5 is, but maybe a year later we'll realize how bad it was still in relation to the rest of the competition?

I think the N4s camera has been regarded as pretty crappy by the majority of people since it was released alongside its battery life.

The N5 seems to have made improvements but its still below par on both those issues.

Did anyone ever say the camera on the N4 was good? The only thing I ever heard when it came out was that it was better than the GNEX camera (which everyone knew was awful). I wish Google would get more serious about cameras on their nexus devices, maybe if they partner with someone other than LG for the next Nexus it might work out better (Sony maybe?).
