Well then what is it then? It's thicker than all the other phones in its generation.

They're all thin. I haven't held any of these phones and ever thought "This is a thick phone."

Unless you're saying the difference between thin and thick is all of 0.2mm.

I am sure 1 mm is a big deal. But considering that lots of people use cases for their phones, I am just wondering out loud how much compromise would be required for added battery mass.

Why is Android not good anymore? The S4 and HTC One do well in audio quality. Google just doesn't give a damn to use higher quality components for its Nexus phones.

HTC is quite good, and S4 is decent. iPhone is still King. Choices are limited for Android users if they care about headphone sound quality. Couple phones can't represent entire Android army. IMO the Nexus line should be the gold standard.

I thought the Note 2 and 3 had the best or among the best headphone output?

Note 2 definitely sucks imo since my fiance has one and I keep telling her to sell that junk. Not sure about Note 3, maybe Samsung went back to Wolfson when designing the Note 3.

iPhone is incredibly neutral and balanced, and it drives high impedance headphones without problem.

Yeah I wish headphone amps were modular and that I could swap one out. I seriously would pay an additional $100 for a higher voltage driver. Sound quality is fine, I just need more volume. No software I've installed has been able to fix this.

Example: I work in a busy, loud kitchen in a large restaurant. We have a pair of pretty janky boombox speakers with an AUX input. We ALWAYS have to use this one guy's iphone to play music because if any of the rest of us use our androids then you can barely even hear the music. Its not just about headphones but about the line-out in general. I don't know if a boombox would be considered high or low impedance.

Why are you always "slamming Google"?

Actually he has great comments about things that are very specific. His comments have often given me a good point to research further from.

I will take "it has _____ wakelock" or "_______ driver doesn't work" over "the phone is slow and laggy." Laggy is to Android phones as snappy was to OSX back in 2005. Overplayed.

^^This!!! Nexus 5 is actually slightly thinner than Nexus 4 which was already plenty thin. I would even accept a 2mm increase in thickness for a larger battery.

I have noticed a pretty negative aspect of the phone though. Earbud volume is pretty abysmal. The iphone 4s I have to compare it to can crank out enough volume to where I need to put it down a notch even when I really want a loud volume (especially when exercising). I was walking today and even turned powerAMPs preamp setting all the way up and it was nowhere near loud enough. I have now had this issue on all three of the android phones I have owned. External speaker volume is ok but headphone volume is way too low.

That is why I use Fauxsound on my devices. But you have to have kernel support.

Lol and you too have great comments that get me to read further. With that said I'm hypothesizing here, but I think I've spent enough of my time on XDA in the past year about the Nexus 4. Believe me, I've been on this quest for good battery life for sometime now and having researched wakelocks across phones, I'm pretty sure that the wakelock was the major culprit for the N4 sucking so badly.

I'd love for 4.4 to drop for the N4 so I can test it heads up against the N5, just in case it's other optimizations in 4.4 giving me better battery life.

Give me a break. You pay for what you get. How much do you expect to get out of a $300 phone?

Edit://
It's a phone that started life as a developers device with a pure Android environment for just that...I am not surprised google doesn't care about whining people.

You do realize people bitch and moan about screen quality, processor speed, camera sensor, OIS, build quality...etc, right?

Its a mere after thought when it comes to headphone out quality. Fact is most people don't notice or care about sound quality. Therefore its never important to implement a good setup. However it is important to me, and the cost is only a fraction of the other large items that show up on the spec sheet.

Exactly. A better amp or driver would add fractions of a percent to the cost. For a phone that is not ultra high volume I think this is reasonable

I know this is really wishful thinking, but I would pay $600 for a "premium" Nexus 5 with a 3000 mAh+ battery and a better camera.

The camera is fine IMHO. Its the AOSP camera app that needs a lot of work.

I do agree though that I would pay more for a Nexus with a larger battery.

I don't think he is trolling, TBH. LG G2 is a premium device that runs the same OS as the Nexus 5. It has a 3000 mah battery and a better camera, which fits exactly your description.

Edit: Nexus ≠ Pure Android. While Google gets the first upgrade (I don't know how exactly this system works) but with the Nexus 5 Google made it clearer than ever that Nexus devices are basically hardware that run Google's skin/ROM of Android. The main benefit of Nexus is lower device prices without subsidies. And in the case of the Nexus 5, it shows. It's no G2, HTC One, or the S4.
