The Moto G isn't particularly a good deal, unless the sd card reader is that important to you.

The 16gb/2gb model is $230. A 2nd Gen Moto X is now $250. And you can score perfectly good HTC One's on ebay for $150.
The battery life on the 3rd G stomps any generation of the X.

so i dropped my 2015 moto X pure on the floor at work yesterday. we have concrete floors. my moto X is toast screen wise. i think honestly its weight helped kill itself more .. sigh

so I took out my extra test phone (a 2015 moto E) and im using that again.

having to make the decision to buy either a new moto G 2015 or a nexus 5x and i went with the G on amazon (they have the 2GB / 16GB model now).

i need more than 16GB of memory so the nexus 5X would have had to be a 32GB version or it'd be annoying managing that space. given the initial reviews are saying the battery is less than great, and i don't think i'd miss the cpu speed that much (the E has an even slower cpu and its well not THAT bad... really just annoying to have its ram swap apps out) it is just hard to justify $430 vs $220. especially since i'd also have to buy a bunch of new USB to usb C cables.

you broke your screen so you bought a new phone? Do you also buy a new car if you get a flat tire..?
How about just spending $50 and changing the screen out?

Amazon has Moto X 2nd gen for $200 now, and new Nexus 5's are $175 on Ebay.
I was excited about the new Nexus, but now I am thinking 5X is too expensive and 6P is too big.

they don't even have the screen for the new moto x for one thing. and its much more than $50. cheapeset i found online for the digitizer alone is $70, and its not remotely an easy repair if i even had the tools or knowledge to do it correctly.

wasting my time on MAYBE fixing the phone isn't worth it. just ebayed the remains and moved on.

Yeah... because spending $600 is the same as $30k

The prices aren't the same, but the analogy fits. Windshield may have been more appropriate, but it fits.

If there's one thing the Internet has never understood well, it's analogies and metaphors.

Check out the LG Stylo depending on carrier it comes pretty decently spec'd for it's price.

MetroPCS/Tmobile/Walmart FamilyMobile comes with 2gb ram 16gb storage.

I think Boost/cricket/etc are 1.5gb ram and 8gb storage.

The finger print scanner is worth $100 on it's own. It's seriously that useful to me...work forces a 6 digit code. Tapping that out 50 times a day is annoying. I can unlock my 5X before it even leaves my pocket.

I assume for exchange access?

You guys should check out the Touchdown HD app. It allows access to exchange servers without having a pin when you unlock the phone or encrypting your phone like most require. I believe it creates itself an encrypted partition (or whatever the smartphone equivalent of that is), and only requires you enter the pin when you open the app. You still get all your push/sync notifications on emails and calendar items without a pin.

Also, your employer can't remote wipe your phone, only the info inside Touchdown.

It is like $20, but that's well worth it to me to not have a security lock on my phone. Been using it over a year

This is anand tech. People build their own PCs, fix their own phones.. No? We now all buy glued together laptops and throw them away when the hard-drive is full? OK then, good to know.

I'd never changed a screen and it took less than an hour. Just learning how was worth it to me. And I also have a job, and a baby. But whatever you wanna do.

No, what YOU don't understand is that there are a lot of people out there with enough money to make it worth replacing something at $600 if it's not worth their time to try and pry it apart and do it manually. The cost of replacement absolutely makes a difference.

Example: I had a USB dongle fail, and reading guides online I could have fixed it with a resistor change. I ended up just spending the $25 to get a brand new dongle. It was a repairable item but it wasn't worth my time to fix it, and I had the money to buy new. I do NOT have the money to buy a new car if something breaks, so that changes the game entirely.

So, to the initial question; what about Nexus 5X vs Moto X Pure (i.e. 2015)??

Both about $400. Both 808 SOC

Fingerprint reader vs waterproof
USB C vs micro USB (but quick charge)
Stock vs almost stock
no SD vs SD card

5X better camera, moto better battery?

Sounds right? Anything else?

For you. You do realize that you applied your specific case to a general analogy? That's a fallacy. I'm not you, OP isn't you. Why should your case apply to everyone else, but not the other way around? How does that make sense?

Doesn't change the analogy, which still fits. The discrepancy in prices is on purpose. It illustrates the ridiculousness. Almost like that's the whole point of analogies and metaphors.

The biggest one: form factor. Moto X is huge in comparison.

guaranteed os updates vs questionable lenovo support

Also the Nexus 5x has very quick charging, it just doesn't require the patented QC technology, so that isn't really a plus for the moto X.

Yes that is certainly a concern. Too bad as I like the idea of SD card and waterproof.. But the more I look at it the more i think the 5X would be the better choice, at least for me:
a) a good camera would be nice
b) Never had an SD card and been fine, and never drowned my phone

Now I just need to decide whether a $400 5X is worth it over a $250 G..? Kinda like the original question here, lol. Been pretty happy with my '13 G, but also frustrating with a phone that's always so slow. Suffering a year of cheapo phone I can treat myself right?

thanks ThisIsChrisKim, I hadn't thought about form factor, that's a good one too.
