This is my first Android device since my droid X. I absolutely hated my expierence with gingerbread and had gone iOS completely (own both iPhone 4S/5 and iPad 2). My wife had racked up about $200 of amazon credit and I decided to give the Nexus 7 a try.

First impression: OMG the screen is gorgeous! Perfect for watching videos on the go. Also the build quality doesn't feel cheap at all (this thing is thin!) compared to other sub $300 tablets. I really do think that the 7" is the perfect tablet size now to use comfortably. My old iPad 2 feels like I'm carrying around a notebook compared to my new Nexus 7.

My only big complaint is that I'm not able to use my purchased iOS apps with android (though this is not a fair complaint, diff Ecosystem). I'm really impressed with androids new UI and customization (again compared to gingerbread).

I think I'm ready to make the switch completely to android, bring on the note 3 to Verizon!

Nexus 7 screen is amazing? Don't know if you're being serious or not. It's average at best, especially compared to the Nexus 10/iPad 4/some of the other tablets out there.

If you want to see an amazing screen, get the Nexus 10 (1600p PLS IPS).

The Galaxy Note 3 is coming to Verizon soon, but it's not a tablet.

2013 Nexus 7 is a huge upgrade over 2012. Not sure you're referencing 2012 or the new 2013.

Nexus 7 (2013) comes with the 1920 x 1200 LCD IPS Panel, the Nexus 7 (2012) comes with the 800 x 1280 Pixel resolution. In terms of Pixels Per Inch (PPI), Nexus 7 (2013) comes with the 323PPI while the 2012 edition comes with 107PPI - http://androidadvices.com/nexus-7-2012-vs-nexus-7-2013-specs-features-pricing-info/

Exactly. My only comparison is my wife's iPhone 5, but my iPad 2's screen looks ancient compared to it close up. There is just nothing out there that can compete with it at the sub $250 price point other than the kindle hd.

I think that site transposed some specs. N7v1 is 216 PPI while N7v2 is 323 PPI, a difference of 107 PPI.

The screen is definitely gorgeous on the new one. I picked one up last week and it's a noticeable difference, which actually surprised me.

Screen is gorgeous. I like how smooth the glass feels, too. Gotta be some kind of Gorilla glass, does anyone know which one?

Yes I am in love with the new Nexus 7 myself. Absolutely perfect for travel use too. Pleasantly surprised by the performance after purchase only to find out the CPU is better than advertised.

First of all, the new N7 is much better than the old N7.

Second of all, I was never impressed with the N10 screen. I really don't get it. Since everything is scaled appropriately, I find that yes the text is crisp, but that's not really the main sell for any screen to me unless you're saying all lower res screens are blurry as hell. The main issue with the original N7 and the N10 is that the screens aren't even calibrated. I get over the cool high res factor within a minute or two because the horrible colors are more noticeable. It's meh at best. I said the same thing about the N4. It's just absolutely ugly. 720p? Cool, but that's about it. However, now that I've calibrated my N4 screen I do marvel at it. It's amazing how crisp the text is and how punchy the colors are. Gamma 2.2!

im more impressed with how thin it is!
its amazing how much tech they squeezed in this new nexus 7. and yes, the screen is stunning!

my sis was thinking of getting an ipod touch 32gb for $300.
then she saw the nexus 7 and asked why is it cheaper and does so much more?
its a no brainer what she chose after she saw the screen too :-D

Not only is the new Nexus 7 better than the iPod Touch, it also crushes the iPad Mini.

One thing Apple fans will claim is that Android does not have proper apps with tablet UI. I say screw tablet UI especially on a 7-8 inch screen. I always prefer the phone UI so everything is streamlined between my phone and Nexus 7.

I would require 10 inch screen to properly utilize tablet UI.

It's still not the 1600p featured on the Nexus 10...

The Nexus 10 display isn't that good. The 300 PPI is pretty nice. But the colors are washed out and the contrast is pretty low. The Nexus 7 2013 is a big step up in color quality and contrast.

I tried one for a few minutes at Futureshop last week. Absolutely the smoothest running mobile device I've ever seen. It was fun trying to make it stutter by quickly changing from a running youtube video to gmail, homescreen, settings, chrome etc. Not a hitch.
In retrospect, I should have done the 'xda forums scroll' test.
Imo it's an SD card slot away from perfect.

Two different use cases. You can haul around a iPod Touch a lot easier than a Nexus 7. I certainly wouldn't be hitting the gym with the Nexus 7.

The N7 is nice but I'm waiting to see what the N10 refresh looks like before buying another tablet.

Yep the 2013 nexus 7 is pretty awesome. The screen is very comparable to a retina iPad, and the s4 pro processor is very quick. Google really has mad a market disrupting device - at $229 it compares favorably to just about anything.

I played with one at Sam's Club on Sunday. It was a very impressive piece of kit. The screen looked nice and operation was very smooth. Only issue was that it would hard reboot a couple of seconds after opening the camera app. Probably an issue isolated to this display model though.

I am having trouble justifying the purchase over my OG N7 though.

The new Nexus 7 is a nicely calibrated 1200p IPS display, and has a higher pixel density than the Nexus 10. Plus the calibration on the Nexus 10 sucks. I think you're being a bit too dismissive of the new Nexus 7, especially because you can almost buy two of the new Nexus 7 for the price of the Nexus 10, which is due for a refresh by Christmas (possibly being made by ASUS).

Furthermore, if I was in the market for a 10" tablet, I'd get an iPad. Apple's tablet ecosystem is still a bit better.

Same here. My N7 is a 3G version, too. I know the LTE version is coming soon so I have to make a decision but it is a never ending self conflict. Used isolated, the N7 2012 seems OK for what I do, but when I see the new N7 my N7 2012 looks like a crap. Especially for the price tags. Then I think about how much I would get for my N7 2012. Heh.

If you go to the store and check out the new N7's display and killer light weight and thinness, it becomes much easier to justify the purchase . Especially if you can dump the old N7 for ~$125 and then upgrade for ~$100.
