Nexus 7 (2nd gen)= OMG the screen is amazing!

I ordered one of these from Amazon yesterday and it should be here tomorrow. I'll be flying to Japan in a little over a week and will use this in lieu of my personal laptop so hopefully all goes well.

Some questions in regards to movie files on this device...

What programs do you use for converting DVDs over to a preferred format/size for this device? Are there any good ways to convert iTunes videos? (These should be DRM free files) FYI, I'll be using a Mac to make these conversions.

I use handbrake for DVD rips to mp4 which will play perfectly on the Nexus using your prefered video player (MXPlayer, Dice Player, etc.)
So long as your Mac has a decent CPU, I find handbrake works best on a Mac.

No idea about iTunes videos.

I use handbrake to encode blu-ray rips so that I can play them on my nexus 7. It'll handle just about any video file format you throw at it. Searching the internet does bring up mention of using handbrake to convert itunes video files to mp4 files as well, which would play on a nexus 7. That's something I've never used it for though. I wasn't even aware that it had the capability to remove DRM protection, so YMMV there.

Edit: Oh wait, you meant that the files in your itunes library are already drm free... Yeah, handbrake should handle that as well.

That's cool I don't mind ripping them again. I basically ripped everything once for use on my Mac but thought it might be faster to just convert the iTunes files over to some usable Nexus 7 format. It would probably be smarter to just wipe everything from iTunes, rip again, and leave in mp4 format.

Wait, what did you use to rip the videos in the first place, and into what exact format? I don't know exactly what you mean by "iTunes files"; do you mean quicktime .mov files? or .m4v?

Ok I'll double check when I get back to the house. I know I used handbrake to rip them to the hd and then when I opened them for the first time they got copied into iTunes. I assumed that Apple being Apple they would get converted to something proprietary but maybe they're just .m4v files. That does ring a bell actually so hopefully all is already good to go.

I'm hoping you'll have full 'net access while in Japan, or got the 32GB version. A few DVDs and you'll be capped out on space. I bought one and returned it...just frustrated Google doesn't believe in external storage.

MX player or Dice Player will just about play any video file. You should be able to test it on your Galaxy Nexus. If it plays on the Galaxy Nexus, N7 will play it too.

I don't think iTunes does any re-converting of video. You can always right-click a video file and choose 'show in finder' to see where the originals are. Just copy them to your device and test with MX Player or your preferred player.

Raging, you're right man, I ordered a 16gb and realized shortly after that may not have been smart. This is my first foray into the tablet market so didn't want to invest too much. I figure if it works out and I like it other than the storage then I'll correct my mistake next year.

You can always use OTG cable to connect USB thumb drives to the N7. OTG cable is like a dollar or two on Amazon or Ebay.

It's ridiculous, how did this get past testing?? Google are getting so sloppy. 4.3 introduced an annoying bug on my Nexus 4 with headphone volume getting stuck on the limiter, and now this! :thumbsdown:

I've had that problem with other Android devices when using some bluetooth keyboards. Since I bought a nicer Logitech K810 I haven't had any problems.

Wasn't this an issue on Android 4.2 with the Nexus 4?

In case anyone has their 2013 Nexus 7 stuck on the X screen (sometimes called a "soft brick"), the steps and button combos for doing a factory reset are the same as the 2012 version, such as [post=35456920]lopri's post here[/post]. There is a minor difference in that "Boot Recovery" is now labeled "Recovery mode". Even aided by Google support, many people get stuck on the dead Android/"No command." screen either not knowing the [Power] + [Volume Up] combo or pressing it too long.

I found the solution in this YouTube video, but I realized that it sounded familiar.

It's tough to find "decent" protectors because you really don't know how well they age until later. User reviews are also difficult to gauge because people usually leave reviews after the first use (amazon). I bought one last year after reading mostly positive reviews, and while it looked OK for the first month or so it quickly deteriorated afterwards.

And the new Nexus 7 comes with Gorilla Glass 2. GG2 is very very smooth and also very good at resisting smudges. (GG3 is even better) You lose those traits by applying a screen protector. I wish there were screen protectors of GG2/GG3 quality.

There are some protectors made of tempered glass but I haven't tried them. They're quite expensive, though.

I don't really understand the need for screen protector on a tablet. A phone I can understand since most people use TPU style case with no screen cover. But most cases for tablets are book/wallet style with a front cover for the screen. Why do you need screen protector for a tablet?

I suppose that's the case if you use a cover-style case. I do, and I rarely bring my tablets out and about like my phone which is ALWAYS on me. Therefore there's less rubbing of the screen in general and as a result less reason for a screen protector.
