Yeah but the phone is 32gb/64gb. I know about the whole cloud thing, but even on the iPad you can buy a 128gb iPad and it has been that way for a long time.

I could see Apple doing the 16/64/128 thing with the iPad this time around. While its still gouging, a 32gb tablet today as the MAX configuration is just a shame.

Yeah I see what you mean, and you could be right about iPad Air 2 given that iPhone 6 has 16/64/128GB configurations. I guess we will find out tomorrow.

That said, one way or another, a 64GB WiFi iPad Air 2 will still end up costing at least $120 more than a 32GB WiFi Nexus 9.

Yeah Apple is known for its extremely high pricing, but I feel like Google is getting close too.

My gripe with the Nexus 9 is mainly because I load up my Nexus 10 before travel. Its been 2 years and I have to watch what I load up with 32gb and leave enough so the NAND doesn't slow to a crawl. The fact that I have to go through the same on a Nexus 9 is annoying. I get that cloud is possible, but I take my tablet on travel for work or personal purposes, and its harder to guarantee internet connectivity everywhere I go.

I for one and very excited about both. I don't really care for the design of the Nexus 6, but I can live with it.

They are both premium specced devices, so I expect to pay a premium price, which I am willing to do. It sounds like the phone will be available on contract, which I am hoping will mainstream these devices. I have moved away from contracts personally, but I can understand the appeal.

Also...I wanted a 4:3 aspect on the tablet. I hate web browsing on the 16:10 with the soft keys. 4:3 will also be very nice for reading books. Since most portable games are designed with iPad in mind, I see this as not being a problem as well.

Edit: My biggest gripe is with the local storage on the Nexus 9. It should have been 32/64. With that said, 32gb on my Nexus 5 has never been stifling, so I do not see it being a problem, especially since I do not put music on a tablet anyway. For a phone, I could justify going 64gb.

Get a tablet with expandable storage?

Nexus 7 16 GB - $230
Nexus 7 32 GB - $270
Nexus 7 32 GB LTE - $330

The components at the time were top of the line, too. So saying that the Nexus 9 has the top components can't be the reason. Following such logic we would have a smartphone costing thousands of dollars.

That leaves the screen size as the sole differentiator for the prices. But then why $200 premium for LTE version? Why $100 difference for extra 16 GB, when 32 GB should be bare minimum in 2014?

P.S. I could care less about iPads because I have no intention of buying one.

Why is this considered to be priced high?

First. Google set precedence by selling previous nice quality tablets very cheaply. Nexus tablets are cheap because they are loaded with only Google apps and Google in theory gets more app and ad revenue from these devices. So Google sells the hardware cheaper than others who don't get the app and ad revenue benefit.

Second. 16GB for $400 on a 9 inch tablet is quite expensive. Though this size does make it hard to make direct comparisons since most tablets are either 8 or 10 inches. And the $80 price bump for 32GB of storage is more expensive that Google has charged in the past.

Though sadly the competition has gotten so bad, that maybe Google will still sell tablets at this price...

Samsung Galaxy Tab S and Tab Pro tablets blow chunks in performance.
Nvidia Shield Tablet seems to have quality issues, is heavy.
... Acer, ASUS, anyone else even making Android tablets?
Amazon's Fire HDX 8.9 looks nice, but no Google Play.
Apple iPad 2, iPad Mini 3 will just be a performance bump this year, nothing exciting.

I suspect that Samsung is the reason the Nexus prices went up. Seemed like for a while Samsung and Google were having a pretty rocky relationship, almost a cold war between the two. Then this summer they suddenly seem to kiss and make up, and I think Google had to stop selling Nexus hardware so cheap to keep Samsung, the largest Android manufacture, happy.

4:3? Yes please.

How is the tablet app situation on Android?
LOLOL.

But seriously, its still meh. Hangouts doesn't even have tablet support I believe... or at least when I ran it on my Nexus 10 2 weeks ago. To clarify I mean like a tablet view. Its just the same app blown up currently.

The components [of Nexus 7 2013] at the time were top of the line, too.

That is incorrect. The Nexus 7 used the Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC @ 1.5GHz at a time when just one month later there were devices on market with the Snapdragon 800 SoC @ 2.3GHz with vastly superior CPU and GPU performance in comparison, and at a time when just three months later the iPad Mini Retina came to market with nearly 2x better CPU and GPU performance in comparison (and a higher res and larger screen to boot).

Why $200 premium for LTE version?

There is a $120 premium to go from 32GB WiFi to 32GB WiFi + LTE (note that Apple charges a $130 premium to make the same jump on the iPad Air, while Amazon charges a $100 premium to make the same jump on the new Kindle Fire HDX 8.9).

It is obvious that Apple's pricing structure for iPad Air had a significant influence on Google's pricing structure for Nexus 9 (even though Nexus 9 is significantly less expensive to begin with). More importantly, the Nexus 9 will not take a back seat to the next gen iPad Air 2 with respect to CPU performance, GPU performance, screen quality, audio quality, OS quality, aesthetics, etc.

Seriously? Way to make an OK post convert to a troll post.

Having owned multiple iOS and android devices, I for one think the iOS sucks. Unfortunately my household still supports them as my wife will only use iPhones.

Umm, what is the world was that about? I never said that iOS is a better quality OS. My point was that Android "L" will bring 64-bit support, lower level graphics API support, etc. to devices so it will at a very minimum match iOS in these areas while being a much more flexible and open operating system too.

Saying OS quality does not sound that way. It sounded like you were just saying iOS is better with no reasons.

Anyway, I do overall agree on the aesthetics, even though it is also an opinion. I do really love the Nexus 5, but the new Nexus 6 is very meh looking. The tablets are mostly screen, so just don't let the aesthetics get in the way.

I can't wait for some reviews to start coming out. If the battery life is good I will ditch my Nexus 5, if not, then I may hold off. The tablet is a day 1 purchase for me though.

So N9 has less storage AND less RAM than the N6!!!!!!WTF

Rant:
Edit: I thought that I read somewhere that the N9 will have a mSD slot, but that link doesn't say that it comes with one!! AND less RAM to boot, I'm done with this Nexus crap!!!!

Wasn't going to get the N6 (will get either Note4, Z3 dual sim), but liked a 4:3 nexus front facing speakers tablet (3GB RAM+mSD slot), I guess I'll grab a mipad (4:3 screen, more storage) or a Tab S (extra RAM), or an ipad mini 3 with 2GB RAM but have to live with a crappy OS, no mSD slot..etc! Or probably the new Sony tablet compact.

God damn those manufacturers! I've been in the market for quite some time trying to find the perfect tablet and can't seem to find it, either they skimp on the RAM, storage options..etc !!

Sorry for the rant!

Android itself is moving away from sd cards. Samsung creates a lot of custom menus to keep this functionality (not to mention any OS changes they have to make...I am not exactly sure what Google leaves out of the underlying OS that Samsung has to add back in). Either you go to the couple OEMs who will provide this, or you just will never buy a tablet (it's not like Apple will ever provide this either). With the OS encypted by default now, it is much cleaner to not have to worry about SD cards.

I had one in my Note 2 and never really needed it, so this is a problem that doesn't affect me. I do understand how it affects some users, but you are fighting a losing battle, unfortunately.

The RAM situation. I have been using the Nexus 5 a long time and have never had any memory issues. I have had MANY MANY MANY apps open at the same time and the device just doesn't slow down. A modern OS should be able to manage memory when multitasking. This is one that makes no sense to really care about. App developers are still living in Apple land where they are limited to 1GB for the entire OS. So...yeah. 2GB is not a bottleneck...YET.

Wrong. That was 2013. This year, everyone realized what a stupid idea the lack of microSD was.

It doesn't matter. Google has moved Android away whether you like it or not. You just have to trust the OEMs will continue it.

I am not a software developer, but I am thinking that Android 5.0 is going to be even harder to have SD cards with the new security features. I could be wrong, but my guess is more difficult development.

Also...I bet the sales due to that SD card slot are very minimal. Most people on this forum are power users and will care. The average user probably doesn't even realize they can remove the back cover of their phone haha.

Edit: I stand corrected...

http://www.androidheadlines.com/2014/07/sd-card-access-changes-better-android-l.html

I still doubt that there will ever be good support for them though, and it will still be up to the OEMs.

No one can deny that the price is too high. I'm sure it's well made but it's more expensive than the iPad Mini and as we know, the app situation is still better on iPad. I hope they keep selling the N7 as I love mine but I won't be picking this up.

Why are you comparing it to an iPad Mini where you can see the pixels from a mile away? The base price is identical to the Mini Retina for the 16GB and cheaper for the 32GB.

He goes into some of the pricing concerns. The new devices are flagship level devices. The tablet is the same price as other flagships (maybe slightly cheaper), and the Nexus 6 is cheaper than other devices with similar specs.

It will be available on contract, so it will be "cheap". I am still interested to see if Verizon (and to a lesser extent AT&T) screws this up somehow.

I for one am very happy to be able to purchase a zero compromise Nexus device.

Edit: I am also a huge fan of competition. I am really hoping Apple announces the new iPads with a base of 32GB of RAM with the same starting prices. Google has updated their tablets in the past with upgrade storage options. The first generation of Nexus 7 launched with 8GB base.

I would have expected the Nexus 9 to have at least the same RAM and storage options as the Nexus 6. The price and lack of a SD card were expected as Google has explained previously their rational of not having expandable storage.

The price is high but it still compares favorably to other larger tablets offered by Samsung, Apple and Amazon, with each having their own pros and cons.

For those who prefer the 4:3 aspect ratio, this is the better purchase in terms of value and price. I prefer this aspect ratio because my tablet consumption is working with documents or reading of some sort (clinical trials, continuing education, research journals).

Nexus line is now dead to me. It's now overpriced phone and tablet running latest Android. I think Google is making big mistake with the high pricing on both Nexus 6 & 9. They're going to lose lot of enthusiast and supporters. I think the winners from this mistake are Samsung, OnePlus One, and Apple. Note 4 just became the must have high end phone on the Android side. OnePlus One just became the new Nexus.

Apple tax looks reasonable now. I will choose Apple products over Google Nexus products every single time at similar price points.

 Google

That guy should mention his height as a caveat for phone sizes. I like his reviews, but seriously, phablets look small in his hands!

he makes good points on the price. i don't think it's overpriced at all. i think it might be too big, but not overpriced. would have liked to see a 5" screen size. that apple did right, releasing two model sizes. google should have done the same.

I do wish they would release a refreshed Nexus 5...get a better camera on it and a bigger battery. Even if they have to make it a little thicker I would be happy.

I had a Note 2. I did like the phablet size, so I may be happy to upgrade to a bigger phone again.
