In past years I've usually bought an iPad and Android tablet. Currently have the Nexus 7 2013 and iPad Mini 2. But this year I think I'm only going to buy one tablet and that's mostly because I want something with a bigger display. May still keep the Mini and 7 around as well.

So I'm deciding between an iPad Air 2 and Nexus 9 (disappointed with Samsung tablets). After fondling the Air 2 at the Apple store and watching some Nexus 9 hands on videos, I think I'm siding towards the Nexus 9...

Price is a big factor. I need at least 32GB, so the Nexus 9 32GB will be $120 cheaper than the 64GB iPad Air 2 I would need to get .

Speakers is another factor. I like the front facing speakers from HTC on the Nexus 9.

This wasn't much of a factor, but I do love the soft touch material on the Nexus 7 and the 9 appears to have the same. If feels real nice to hold and I don't worry about it scratching. So that's a bonus. I think I like the white color more, hopefully it also feels nice (on the Nexus 5 apparently the white material was more slippery).

And I'm more invested in the Google eco system. Not a major impact on the decision, because I can use all my Google apps on the iPad (and have been, works just fine). But obviously the integration is better on a Nexus tablet.

So, I'm really looking forward to the Nexus 9.

Wow....so, it's almost as if you are using reason and sense in your decision making. Amazing!

Pricing from 16gb to 32gb isn't Google like. Normally it wouldn't be any more than an extra $50 to double the storage. Wonder why they're asking for such a premium this time.

There is this weird thing many manufactures, including Google have in that they want to charge more money for a storage bump on devices with bigger screens and bigger price tags. Like there is some correlation between the cost of memory and the screen size or something.

Only thing I'm mad about really.

32GB to 64GB is less of a price jump for the Nexus 6 than 16GB to 32GB for the Nexus 9.

I was looking at another 9" 4x3 tablet in the store the other day, and since it is 4x3, the 9" is much larger than I had imagined. I'm sure I would get used to it, but it looks so much larger than my N7. Although I think at 4x3, 8" would have been better.

Sooo tempted to get one, but my boss will be giving me his iPad Air when he gets the Air 2, so there's really no need.

I think it's the perfect tablet size, IMO.

Mine hasn't shipped yet. Hoping I get an email today that it ships. I see on XDA some are getting shipped notifications already.

The reviews are weirdly very differing.

One review says terrible battery life and lag.

Other reviews say awesome battery life and no lag at all.

What.

Anandtech mentions their review unit has a pretty old firmware from August. So perhaps the inconsistent reviews could be older review units vs new shipping units? *shrug*

The battery life seems average in the Anandtech first impressions test. The GPU performance was very good most of the time. The CPU performance is mixed, sometimes great, sometimes average.

Bendgate 2, the return of the soft spot

I'm just OCD enough that that might bug the hell out of me. I've seen other hands on mention the hollow feeling as well. Hopefully mine isn't like that.

Looks like Best Buy is stocking the 16GB black model in store. I might walk over there and take a look to see if it's on display (knowing Best Buy it probably won't be for at least a week).

I ordered the 32GB white model from Amazon, should arrive tomorrow.

Most of the reviews seem to be pretty much "Good, but no ipad" A lot of hate for the price. $489 for the 32gb model does seem excessive. If the base model was $399 and 32gb I'd be all over it.

I could understand this if it was a cheap tablet like the N7 (for example, the N4 had hollow spots and would creak if you pressed on it), but we're talking closer to premium pricing here and likely tackling on high end tablets like the iPad with this. I'm a bit disappointed TBH.

Yeah, if I get flexing like I see above, I'll most likely return it and probably try to get an iPad Air 2 during Black Friday (not sure I can stomach spending $600 a 32GB tablet).
