Got one for Christmas. after having used it for almost a month, it is very clear that android has improved overwhelmingly on the tablet front since my last tablet purchase in 2011. I still get some lag though, which I don't understand. But, it's more than bearable.

I do like the 4:3 ratio in many things, but media consumption is not one of them. There are a few games that reduce the FOV in an unexpected way that I am not a fan of as well. The front facing speakers more than make up for it though.

I guess I use my tablet primarily for Browsing and some games and haven't experienced any lag yet.

Compared to the Tab S I also own, the Nexus 9 feels way faster.

Does the back on your new Nexus 9 flex? That seemed to be a common issue with most of the launch day tablets.

My new one has it but it doesn't have the clicking sound the 1st one had.

Either way, I still consider this a "non-issue" as it doesn't even come into play when holding it. More being nitpicky, which is fine, but to me, couldn't care less.

Has anyone else bought one recently and noticed the improved(?) screen that thebigbolgna did? Hopefully he didn't just get lucky.

From what I understand the build quality is luck of the batch draw. Differences range from better buttons, better screens, and no flex on the back.

The Nexus Tablet Lottery is alive and well, even at high-end price points.

Over at XDA it still appears to be luck of a draw.

From what I've seen, my new one is about as good as I've seen. Way less light bleed than the previous one I had. Not even comparable.

I can take a picture of it tonight and show it.

Been using my Nexus 9 daily now for a couple weeks, draining it almost daily

Its my favorite tablet. If the screen bleeding issues were non existant, I think people would have reviewed this tablet more favorably. It's a great tablet. Its fast, screen is great, speakers are better than most tablets, headphone Amp is awesome, it drives my headphones to volumes my other tablets cannot reach. It also feels like a premium tablet. Its solid and the white model is a sexy device.

I would take it anyday of the week over my Tab S. The Tab S feels so much slower in day to day use. I've barely touched the Tab S since I got the Nexus 9.

4:3 is definitely the way to go. So much better for Browsing, Games, you name it. (Unless you watch movies on your tab)

Well I hate to say it, but I'm jumping ship on getting a new Google tablet. I loved the concept of referenced hardware, but cheap builds, pick of the litter and a constant change of manufacture is leaving a bad taste with me. Don't get me wrong, I love my Google phones, but I'm done. Picking up a tablet and having it lag...lag...lag and then read how you have to disable this or trick it to do that...BS. I'll deal with the Apple and have a work-around to get done what I can do effortlessly on a Google product. In the end it will not become a device that's just not usable (Nexus 7, I'll remember what you use to be).

Even my Nexus 2013 went downhill a bit with Lollipop. With 5.0.2 it has gotten better, though. Still some lag every once in a while but nothing outrageous.

My work laptop has more "lag"

I, and family members, have a N7 (1st and 2nd gen) and haven't experienced any of what you described. Also I'm not sure how you can conclude that the N9 will be the same, considering it's completely different hardware (even if it was just the different CPU alone) made by a different manufacturer, and a different OS. That's a bit like assuming all Linux based OS's and hardware are bad.

you would think that a flagship nexus product would come out with minimal quality issues. my 2012 nexus 7 has some really annoying bugs that has my head scratching. I was pretty shocked when i tried to connect it to my computer, dragged and drop files to it, and then it would disconnect all the time.

as much as apple annoys me, every ipad iteration is pretty much perfect.

what is the best big android tablet nowadays?

The Venue 8 7000 looks pretty good.

I got the Venue 8 7000 from Best Buy last weekend. It is a really nice tablet. I was trying to decide between it and a Galaxy S 8.4 (which was $50 cheaper at the time). But I decided there were just to many things I didn't like about the Galaxy (Touchwiz, hardware home button, relatively weak GPU) that spending the extra money was worth it.

Anyways, I've really been enjoying it; however, my previous Android tablet was a 2012 Asus TF300, which I wanted to break over my knee half the time, so almost anything is an upgrade.

Pros:

  • super AMOLED screen - I think it may be the same as the Galaxy Tab S, and it looks great.
  • Great Battery life - haven't tested it extensively, but seems very good and reviews are also good for battery life (it's definitely better than my TF300!)
  • Nearly stock experience - Dell thankfully kept the bloat to a minimum and operation is very similar to my LG Optimus G on SlimROM
  • microSD support. Dell is claiming that it support up to 512GB microSD!? I'm not sure about that, but it took the 32GB card from my TF300 OK.
  • Outstanding build quality, It's a really nice looking tablet and very solid.
  • I've not run into any issue with lag, it's all been very fluid. Some people complain that screen rotation is too delayed, but I don't have an issue.
  • Speakers sound great, have good volume.
Cons:

  • Still shipping with KitKat. Dell has said they are working on Lollipop and rumor is it will be released this month or next. But Dell does not have a stellar reputation when it comes to updates. Right now, I'd rather have a stable KitKat than an unstable Lollipop that Dell doesn't update. Also, isn't the microSD card more limited in KitKat vs Lollipop? If you want to move apps to SD, I think you need Lollipop?
  • It's a Dell running Android on an Intel platform. Don't expect much (any?) 3rd party support. I know people have rooted this device, but haven't done it yet.
  • The unsymmetrical appearance really bothers some, and I'll admit that I've had unintentional screen touches due to the really thin bezels on the three sides. It's configuration does make it a little unwieldy.
  • Stereo speakers are on the bottom "chin". Work great in portrait mode, less practical in landscape mode.
  • No really good covers/cases are available for it yet. Dell sells an overpriced model that gets bad reviews. I bought something off Amazon that I haven't received yet.
  • Disabled feature - Intel is pushing this depth-camera system the tablet has where you can change the focus depth and measure things in real-life units directly from the picture. After unboxing the tablet, it installed an updated that disabled the measuring feature, saying it will be renabled later. Not sure why or what the status is. Honestly, I think this camera system is a gimmick anyways - I'd rather they leave it off for the $$.
All in all, I like it. It works great for my use (mainly browser and media consumption) and has been a nice experience.

ipad size? 9-10 inches i guess

Well Nexus 9 it is, or if you don't hate Samsung then maybe Galaxy Tab S 10.5

The reason I ask is because in Android world there's always a Note Pro 12.2" or even an HP Slate Pro 21". They are Android, and they're 'big'.
