Look like I will have to listen to Cowboys fans at work tomorrow about how great the team is.

Nice to see the Seahacks didn't get the normal ref help st the end of the game.

Is there a new rule I'm not aware of this year about refs calling penalties on a challenge? Green Bay was challenging a spot , refs noticed an Atl player 5 feet short from getting oob and called them for a penalty. Yet they didn't give Atl the time out they called, even when the same video that showed 12 on the field, showed the coach calling s timeout. Everything should be reviewable. Picking what can and can't be is dumb .

And Newton was right in his press conference, he's usually treated differently. Yeah he's a runner a lot and the rules do change when out of the pocket, missing that knee shot is inexcusable. He should be pissed. If it happened to Brady, it'd have been called. The rule is there because of Brady when he got hurt.

This has to be the worst officiated season I've seen. So many terrible and missed calls, and the end of games too.

I saw that as well in the GB game and thought WTF? I was not aware that you could do that either. I don't know if it's new this year or just one of those many oddities of the rules in the NFL that just rarely happens.

And I also agree about Cam and the officiating as a whole. There were worse missed calls against the Redskins today (and I won't even get into the ticky tacky calls on the Redskins, Josh Norman already did that) than the hit on Cam Newton IMO. Crowder is lucky to be not have a broken neck right now.

http://washington.cbslocal.com/2016/10/30/facemask-jamison-crowder-uncalled/

Then you have this that went uncalled as well:

https://twitter.com/ChadwikoRCC/status/792754657550479360?ref_src=twsrc^tfw

There was also a missed late hit, helmet to helmet, on Kirk Cousins in the opening drive. It's hard to watch that game and not think the refs are biased against the Redskins.

I saw the Norman interview too. "He sucks", haha. He's right though. He's got a name now, no matter just or unjust, and I believe the refs will keep on him. He and Newton both called out the refs saying they should be held accountable. Which I happen to agree with. A missed or bad call at the end of a game that can sway the outcome of such game. Which could get someone or more than just one person fired, needs to be addressed. I have no doubt I could not do their job. I know that the game is very fast, and we have HD replay. You should be able to challenge almost any play. Some are discretionary, some are black and white.

This whole targeting thing (especially in college) is getting out of hand. I understand and realize the need to protect players who can't defend themselves. And if playing are launching themselves at someone. However if a player is trying to tackle someone, already making the move and the offensive player at the last second makes a move to put their helmet in line with the defensive players, it shouldn't just fall on the defensive player. It happens so fast.

Here is another bullshit call from the refs that would have given the Redskins and Hopkins redemption at missing his first FG attempt in OT.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_RYcuLAHxM

Norman also addressed that one too, such a ticky tacky bullshit call. If you're going to call that in a game changing way on the last drive of the game, you have to call that shit on both teams the whole game, which didn't happen. It's clear as shit that the defender was back pedaling and moving that way regardless of the hand check by Garcon.

This kind of shit happens almost weekly against the Redskins. I'm not saying it's the reason they've lost some close ones but it is very frustrating to watch games play out the way they do. I can't imagine how the players feel. They even get a bunch of BS calls in games they win.

There's holding on every single play in the NFL. There's pass interference on almost every pass. The refs have a huge influence on the game and it's not a good thing. I watched the Bills-Pats game yesterday and the Bills started so many drives at first and 10+ because of penalties. For a running team that's a death sentence... Were some of the calls genuine? Sure! But there were a few calls that just weren't needed.

Then I watched the awful pick plays the Saints used against the Seahawks... How some of those calls are missed I have no idea.

It's really difficult to explain to non-hardcore football fans what the heck is happening in these games and why calls are/aren't being made. It's making the games difficult to watch for me.

But! At least it's not the NBA!

LOL I saw one of the pick plays in the Saints/Seahawks game in the endzone at the end of the game. How that was missed ... wow.

Yeah holding is literally every play. Just so much worse when it can change an outcome of a game because it's still the end. Like with Atl a few weeks ago, obvious PI and no call. Last chance for Atl since it was 4th down. No excuse for that.

True. Luckily my wife loves football too. College and pros. She's knowledgeable about it as well, cheered for a college team. Yeah, NBA is my least fav anymore. Used to love it growing up. Pretty much the only wish I have is for the Warriors to lose again. In another gloriously terrible way. Dislike them and bandwagon fans so much.

Seattle was the most penalized team at least last season, and maybe the year before. Not sure where people get the fantasy that the refs help them. Facts say the opposite.

In fact now it's gotten to the point where they give the teams who play them phantom calls. A couple the announcers literally couldn't figure out what they were based on.

Still bodes well that with a crapton of injuries and hampered by terrible officiating they still almost beat the Aints on the road. Hopefully when they get guys back and Wilson heals they'll finish strong.

Your "facts" don't take into account when calls have been made. They've repeatedly been given or not called on a penalty when the game is on the line. Few times this year. Going back to 2012 I think it was with Tate and the Packers end of game td.

No facts don't say the opposite. This isn't about judgement calls like holding or pass interference, this is the Seahawks getting the benefit of repeated "holy sh!t WTF were the refs thinking" calls like these.

Watching that replay never gets old. How the refs got it wrong even after replay is just fucking mind boggling. Thank god they fucked it up so bad that the real refs came back the following week. I remember the refs getting standing ovations at the stadiums the following week.

I bet I could dig up a half dozen links on your favorite team. It means crap when the numbers say otherwise.

Penalties were 11-2 yesterday. But I'm sure that had no effect on the outcome.

Can we agree that the refs influence the results of way too many games?

Stop it! it conflicts with their beliefs! Seattle plays hard and pushes the limits, just like the Patriots, and both teams have found great success doing so. Seattle gets penalized the most, possibly gets away with more than others, but it's simply normal because they just play harder than other teams. Here you've got people admitting that holding can be called on nearly every play (which is true), but complaining that only one team doesn't get called for it as much as they should, even though they get called for it more than any other.

If on one had you agree that every team holds on every play, how is it that on the other hand you think it is "unfair" that the most penalized team isn't penalized more?

unbelievable.

The problem that I see with officiating is that (in the Redskins example I am talking about this week) there is no consistency. When you make ticky tack calls for one team, you need to do it for the other team. If you're going to call OPI on Garcon for barely brushing up against a defender who's already moving that direction, then you can't let AJ Green push off of Norman and not call it. And that is exactly what was happening all game yesterday.

Ah yes, the imaculate interception. The replacement refs part of that season.

Just remind yourself (as others should), that whenever one bitches about the officiating this year or any year after, about the replacement ref season.

If anything, I think poor officiating this year is unevenly represented by the new rules for excessive celebration and taunting. Most of these are obviously ridiculous, but you have to understand that the officials are in the process of figuring this one out just as much as the rest of the league is. All of these look stupid (I don't think such calls will ever stop looking stupid, when they are made), and in such high abundance this year, most viewers approach each game with something of a default perspective that the officiating is overall poor.

Yeah it was awful. Consistency is the real issue in the end, but it exists in all sports. It's always going to appear worse for the teams and fans that get shafted for being on the wrong end of inconsistency--that is not to belittle the problem. I think inconsistency is always going to be a part of human-error and vision-prone sports officiating and for certain calls, I don't think that can ever be eliminating by digital tracking or robots. It seems to me that players earn a label from the refs and after some time, that's really what influences what calls are made against them. Fair or not, I think this is at least one angle that players that feel they are being unjustly treated can work on, and it almost always has to do with attitude. Norman is a pretty hot-headed dude on the field and that's something he should work on, but at the same time, he is pretty much alone out there these days. Gameplan against the Skins this year has been to just throw everything towards Breelund and watch the numbers change on the scoreboard. I'd be constantly pissed if I was Norman, too, having to break coverage and pick up slack, or play even more aggressive when the play comes his way.

Sherman gets the same sort of attention, largely because of his perceived attitude (he certainly doesn't help that) and because he just plays his ass off. At the same time, Seattle is encouraged to play hard, push the penalties and just play the numbers that in the end, you eventually come out on top in the W-L column depending on how you play the penalty game. It's how the game is. Either play it now or just keep bitching until something else happens to change it more to your liking. I'm sure Belichick will just keep adding more rings to his fingers while the rest of the league keeps bitching about rules that need to be changed!

I honestly don't have a "favorite" team. But you have to admit the 'Hawks have gotten the benefit of some of the worst blown calls in NFL history the last few years. The Immaculate Interception is probably the worst since screwing up the coin toss although this one below comes pretty damn close:

They dont really get away with it though if they are penalized the most in the league year after year. The refs are hesitant to call penalties in big spots. Its kinda the same in all sports. I doubt the refs and league just decided yesterday to job the Seahawks by not calling those Saints pick plays. The Saints did them in a way that made it hard to call. At home, and late in the game when it mattered. They basically dared the refs the call it. And why not...its only a penalty if you get caught, but the upside is totally worth it. The missed calls only really bothered me after the second pick, but meh. I still thought Seattle was going to win and if Russell throws that ball a second earlier they would have. The penalty discrepancy was pretty jarring though. 11-2 is crazy considering the average number of penalties the Saints normally get.

Now, that train of thought doesnt seem to apply to the Raiders...they were getting called for everything, no matter what the situation. Amazing that it didnt matter. These Raiders are almost like the ones I remember when I was a kid....just without the menace on defense.

I agree with this. Different crews call differently. Take a bit to see how they're going to call it l, even more so in the NBA. But like you said , they've got to call it the same way for both teams. One week from the next can change dramatically too. The lack of consistency is terrible

I am a packers fan, so i obviously i like that they got a call their way, but i really dont think it makes much sense and agree with you. I have no idea how that ref did not see the coach yelling for the timeout. He was close and you could tell he was asking for it over and over. I also love that he was yelling at the refs about the timeout until he saw that they did not convert the 3rd down. Then he shut up until the challenge came back with 12 men on the field, then he was upset again. Cant blame him but i still thought it was funny.
