I have no idea what penalty you are talking about, maybe it was dumb or not, but here is a little clue. The NFL is a private organization and as one of it's employees you have to abide by some rules. Some of those rules may include certain types of speech. Do you think you can work for say a car dealership and say whatever the fuck you want to customers there with zero repercussions?
A frame of reference (at minimum) might be helpful here?
