Not sure what you're referring to; the Chargers are calling his status day to day. In other words, they've dodged a bullet. No rib fracture was reported, and IIRC the NFL is fairly strict about lying on injury reports. Herbert will likely play with some type of wrap/pad protecting his torso, but I'd almost argue you can beat the Jags next week with Chase Daniel starting instead.Any kind of serious rib-injury for Herbert is an extremely big problem for the Chargers. Unless they're exaggerating the severity of the injury SD is in some serious trouble for the whole '22 season.
Staley was okay at managing the game flow; it was just funny because last season he was the ultimate riverboat gambler on 4th downs. I thought it cost the Chargers some key games, but the overall 4th down conversion rate was actually excellent.I think Staley played it more "traditional" on 4th down because he trusts he defense more. From what I saw I think he made the right calls. The only one I really think he blew was the one with the pick six. The TE was clearly gassed...should have paused even if it meant giving the defense a chance to regroup a bit.
As to whether he should have pulled Herbert. I don't know. But if he can walk out next Sunday he'll play. I mean I know he's good but walking back out on the field showed real toughness.

Yeah it was shocking how they handled that 1st and goal at the 3. Everett was gesturing to get pulled; you'd think at least the OC or one of his underlings would have seen that. Not to mention players or coaches on the field of play. Going hurry up and then targeting Everett cost them the game IMO. Even if he wasn't gassed, I'd pound the rock 2 (or 3) times from the 3 yard line. The run game wasn't going great statistically, but Ekeler was doing enough to keep the defense honest.
Remember that Herbert went out for one play, was evaluated by medical staff, and then allowed to check back in. Then he was hit hard again and that's when he was clearly in a lot of pain. According to ESPN's Gamecast, the Chargers were about 3% to win with 3 minutes to go. In week 2, the risk/reward of trying to realize your 3% equity just isn't there. If this was the 17th game for a playoff spot, or the margin was 7 points, I would understand the decision. I agree there's something to be said about a young QB showing toughness to his teammates, but the HC has to override that desire.
