Dang. I'm really hoping for a rematch in the Super Bowl because Dan Campbell has made that team fun as hell. And I love how aggressive he is, somehow even more than I would be.

What a stupid decision to take an onside kick with 12 minutes left. Even if the guy didn't return it that far it was stupid, I said a quick 'wtf' to the tv when they announced they were doing an onside kick. Oy.

Yes, Josh Allen is beasting and has the pole position for the MVP award. Even so, the Bills attempted 3 FGs (missing one) and punted once. Giving Allen the ball isn't an automatic TD drive.

OTOH the chances of converting an onside kick is minuscule after the rule changes. This season it's under 8%. This is much worse than the calculated 4th down gambles that Dan Campbell routinely calls for.
Surprisingly enough, the Lions actually executed the final onside kick well. The kicker Bates blew up the first receiver and the Lions actually had a chance in the scrum.

Almost forgotten because of Allen's brilliance is that Jared Goff threw for 494 yards and 5 TDs. To win that game, the Lions needed to stop the Bills (at least) once. Praying for an onside miracle wasn't the way, no matter how shattered your defense was.

I didn't watch the Giants play yesterday because it was the weekend and I had a life versus watching that shit show. But I'm home tonight on a school night, and have some football on checking on it here and there, and it sure looks like the raiders are throwing the game.

I can't say if the Giants were or were not throwing the game yesterday because I didn't watch but they also played the Ravens.

But the raiders look like they are throwing it.

Good lord...I'm really hoping Purdy doesn't hold out for a mega deal. I don't see him as that kind of guy, I think he's kind of a "get my bag but do what's good for the team too" kind of dude, but we'll see. In the meantime, I'm not even sure we can play spoiler for the division? We just have AZ left, and they're in 3rd, so maybe we can knock them out of playoff hopes if there's not a clear lock by the end of the regular season. And somehow beating Detroit would be nice but that's a huge task.

You don't want to play spoiler though; you want the best draft pick you can get.

As for Purdy, you should be happy if he gets $270M over 5 years (and hopefully the guaranteed money isn't ridonkulous). If he wants to approach Dak Prescott's $60M AAV, that's pretty gross.

(Besides the annual cap hit) The guaranteed money is the most important number, but it's widely expected the AAV will start at $55M (see Trevor Lawrence and Jordan Love).

In short, Purdy is already guaranteed a "mega deal." The only question is how much pain he wants to extract. I'm just not expecting him to take a below market value deal to ensure the front office doesn't have to strip down the roster.

Kirk Cousins seemed like this kinda guy too, until he wasn't.

How so? Cousins was the first franchise QB in the salary cap era to get a fully-guaranteed contract. Then he did it again with the Vikings before they moved on this past offseason. Suddenly that decision looks MFing brilliant.

Without getting into a big debate about his career, he's been paid a ton of money for one playoff win.

But the QB contract numbers are starting to get silly. I don't mean the big numbers themselves, because that's fairly expected. The issue is when the guys resetting the market are not elite, or still very much unproven.

Just for example, I like Jordan Love but he got $55M AAV just because the Packers curb stomped the Cowboys in the wild card round. Likewise, Trevor Lawrence and Tua also got paid this past offseason and you can question those two as well. There are only a handful of truly elite QBs in the NFL, but nowadays every up-and-comer gets paid like one too.

Besides Tom Brady in his prime, I can't name a single QB that left so much money on the table for his team to fill out the roster.

There were also a lot of empty seats. Sad for a game with playoff implications. Not sure how much of that can be blamed on the game moving.

Obviously I can't debate you on WFT, but sounds like Kirk Cousins was never a team-friendly guy to begin with? That's kinda my interpretation of history; he went to MN to get his fully-guaranteed bag. Now the Falcons will pay him about $100M for less than a season's worth of work LOL.

More to the point, there are a few whispers that Brock Purdy is just a "system QB" and can't be worth the staggering numbers that non-elite QBs are now getting. Years ago, ESPN's Bill Barnwell wrote a piece about the Rams deciding whether to extend Jared Goff, or passing and looking for its next QB in the draft.* Ultimately, they extended Goff but that didn't really work out for them (hence Matt Stafford).

It's an interesting idea, but most GMs don't have enough job security to even think about it. Could John Lynch actually let Purdy walk and try to find the next Brock Purdy in the draft? Few people think so, but OTOH do you want to give Purdy the biggest contract in NFL history?

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Cousins was the nice Christian family guy who happened to play quarterback. He was the nicest person on the team and just had that "team comes first" mentality and talked about it. He worked hard and you could tell he loves the game of football and played it for the passion. He also knew that the team needed more help than just a QB and came off as though when it came to negotiations, that he would take a deal that would allow the team to pay him and also be able to afford the other pieces needed.

But then it came time to talk contract and he just was looking out for himself and held out to get the franchise tag, twice, setting an NFL record in doing so, and that furthered to hinder the team as far as salary cap goes.

And I don't blame him one bit for doing so. I would have done the same thing too. Dude bet on himself big time and it paid off huge and now dude has generational wealth for his family.

The time you are talking about with him is after all the drama happened in Washington. He has played it PERFECTLY for himself to build this generational wealth and I applaud him for that.
