They need salary caps for players.. I would that if they put it up for a vote players would go for it. Even if you capped the QB position at 10% of the salary cap it would be like 22.5 million a year.
I mainly disagree. They have individual "caps" in the NBA of at most 35% of the team's cap. This distorts the market in two ways.
1. The superstars can't get more, so they effectively subsidize ALL other players. MVP-level players are worth a lot more than they can get under the NBA CBA, esp. when you consider commercial value as well (Steph Curry alone has added billions of dollars of value to the Warriors).
2. Somewhat because of #1, a lot of good players get "max deals" when they probably aren't even that good. I could assemble a huge list of guys, but think of players like Zach LaVine or John Wall from a few years ago. Bradley Beal right now is overpaid IMHO. It's hard to say if GMs would have more intestinal fortitude if they didn't feel compelled to give promising young guys a max deal based just on potential. NFL GMs have almost no leverage when negotiating these QB extensions. Thus the contracts keep ballooning.
Remember the players get paid a fixed slice of total league revenue. As long as the NFL grows the pie, the players have to get their cut. Nobody knows how long and far that brisk growth will continue.
Players would never agree to a 10% individual cap, even though there are many more non QBs.
