Dennis Green can't survive Phoenix

edit: Reportedly, Alabama has formerly offered Saban and Saban is expected to respond today or tomorrow.

edit2: ESPN's Hotseat List

Tom Coughlin, New York Giants: Coughlin acted like a coach on the hot seat last week by firing his offensive coordinator, John Hufnagel, and replacing him with Kevin Gilbride. That may be the move that saves his job, but the Giants probably need to win a playoff game for Coughlin to get to the fourth year of his contract. Coughlin still has ownership support in high places, so he has a chance to stay. John Mara will stand by him. Plus, his regular-season record is 25-23 in three seasons. What blindsided him was the rapid decline of quarterback Eli Manning. Gilbride made Manning more effective by calling running plays against the Redskins for Tiki Barber, who carried the Giants to the playoffs.

Art Shell, Oakland Raiders: All anyone knows for sure is Shell will meet with Al Davis sometime this week to discuss next season. Shell and the Raiders deny reports Shell is going to be fired. The Raiders finished 2-14 and scored only 12 offensive touchdowns. Shell inherited a bad offense. He changed offensive coordinators, but the offense didn't get any better going from Tom Walsh to John Shoop. Davis rehired Shell and admitted he made a mistake when he fired him in 1994. It may be hard for Davis to look Shell in the eye again and take away Shell's chances of turning around the franchise.

Bill Cowher, Pittsburgh Steelers: The 15-year institution didn't tell his players or the organization what his plans were after Sunday's season-ending victory over the Bengals, but most people in Pittsburgh figure he's going to step down. Cowher has a job for life with the Steelers, but he apparently wants a break. He built a $3 million home in North Carolina and figures to move there to recharge his batteries. Russ Grimm and Ken Whisenhunt are the leading candidates from Cowher's staff to replace him.

Bill Parcells, Dallas Cowboys: Owner Jerry Jones won't fire him, but Parcells may not want to come back to this mess. Terrell Owens is a constant pain. The defense is falling apart. Weeks ago, when everything was all hugs and happiness along the sidelines, Parcells seemed to be a lock to come back as long as Owens was cut. Now, you have to wonder. Parcells even had to use some four-man line concepts Sunday against the Lions to kick-start the pass rush. Parcells is always year-to-year, but the team may need to show something in the playoffs to convince him to come back.

Nick Saban, Miami Dolphins: Saban didn't seek out Alabama. It is coming to him. So this is an interesting juncture in Saban's Dolphins coaching career, and he may have to think about the Crimson Tide offer, which is expected to be one of the best in college football. Saban has a lot of age on his defense and he really doesn't know what he has at quarterback. The Dolphins went from 9-7 to 6-10, but they had easy schedules both years. Saban has said on five different occasions he would coach the Dolphins next season. His credibility is on the line if he leaves.

Jack Del Rio, Jacksonville Jaguars: There doesn't figure to be a change here after Del Rio had a 12-4 playoff season in 2005 and signed a contract extension. But his seat is getting a little hotter, which might put him on the 2007 hot seat. Drafting wide receivers and a tight end haven't made the passing attack better. The Jags went through three quarterbacks this season and must decide which one can take them back to the playoffs -- Byron Leftwich, David Garrard, Quinn Gray or someone outside the organization. Don't expect Del Rio to be fired.

edit3: Dolphins announce press conference at 4PM.

I'm betting Saban is staying. If it is a press conference in Miami that means Saban is staying. There'd be a press conference in Tuscaloosa if Saban was going.

No surprises there. Green, especially, doesn't belong in the NFL.
Now if only the Giants would can that old dope Coughlin!

Who would you like to hire instead?
If Charlie Weis won't leave the Irish, there aren't many people I would like over Coughlin.

That's not exactly a smart way to go about it. Seriously.
Would you rather have Mora Jr.?
You think HE can get a handle on the egos in the Giants locker room?

ThePresence, obviously I'm being facetious with that statement. Look, I don't know who the next head coach should be, but I am sure they need a change. That decision will be made by the new GM.
Charle Weis? Sounds like he is everyone's favorite at this time. Can he be had from ND is the question. The answer, of course, is dollars. We shall see.
If not, rumor has it Belichek might be able to be lured from the Pats.
Whoever it is, I sure hope it isn't some old, recycled has been. I would love to see some young, innovative ideas from the college ranks on the Giants sideline next season.

Mora Jr only needs to blame himself.

Mr. Blank gave him every opportunity and tools necessary to win.

40 mil

That's insane

and we wonder why Tuition costs are nuts

The Athletic Dept pays the coach's salaries. Institutions like Alabama have a large enough athletic budget that they can afford to pay that kind of salary without ever having to dip into the general budget.

I could be wrong here but I'd say the football program at Alabama more than pays for itself, along with several other athletic groups that don't generate any worthwhile revenue, and has no relationship to tuition costs.

You would be correct sir. Bama just completed major athletic facilities upgrades to the Football stadium, Basketball arena, new tennis courts, new soccer stadium, and more without ever affecting the cost of tuition. 4mil/yr for a football head coach would be a drop in the bucket.

Total bullsh!t. The cost of tuition throughout the UA system has rose more than 50% since 2000. The Bama football program does pay for itself, but they just had major upgrades like you mentioned, and they just bought out Shula. The BOT and you are both FOS. They wouldn't let UAB "overpay" for Jimbo Fisher (actually very little money for a coach of his quality), so UAB had to get UGA's Coordinator.

FACT: UAB provides over 40% of the revenue for the UA System, yet they receive less than 25% of the budget .
FACT: UAB was not allowed to use outside money to pay the headcoach, and the BOT said "just too expensive for UAB."

Why can the BOT spend 4 million on Saban, yet we can't even get Jimbo for 1/8th of that? UAB doesn't even get the money back it puts into the system.

Justify it however you want, but UA is ROBBING the system, and they CANNOT afford their current athletic budget. They expanded facilities in two major programs and bought out a very expensive coach. If the board can't afford Jimbo Fisher, then how the hell can they afford such a contract for Saban?

Total bullsh1t. I wish they'd burn the University in Tuscaloosa to the ground and salt the earth. Bunch of dumbass rednecks run the place, and I can't wait until UAB gets enough government support ot leave the system.

Cost of tuition at every schools has risen significantly since 2000. The athletic dept is not the reason for the rise though.

Yeeeeeeeeah, let us know how you really feel.

Like most everyone else in Birmingham, I could give two craps about the UAB football program. Maybe when they start filling more than a quarter of the stadium without having to give tickets away they can try playing with the big boy programs of Division 1A.

Prove that it didn't rise due to an expanding athletic budget.

Tuition always rises, but it has risen a MASSIVE amount -- an increase never before seen in the system. If there is millions laying around to pay Saban, then why are they increasing tuition? The Bama football team makes a lot of money, but not that much. You should go look into what teams have made over the past 5 years. It was in the NYTimes not long ago.

Art shell inherited a tremendous offense. Their core of receivers at the start of the year were among the most talented in the NFL. Leading with Moss, one of the best of all time, and Jerry Porter who would easily be a #1 receiver in a lot of NFL teams. There was also Doug Gabriel who was one of Tom Brady's go to guys while he was in New England...and Ronald Curry is an extremely talented, athletic guy who stepped it up big time at the end of the year.

You also had Lamont Jordan who ran for 1000 yards last year, and a solid lead blocker in Zack Crockett as well. Aaron Brooks added a strong arm and good mobility at QB as well.

It was a combination of the Porter saga, Mr. bed & breakfast, the injury to Brooks leaving a very inexperienced, immobile QB leading the ship in Oakland, which lead to Moss's comments which ultimately lead to one of the poorest offenses in NFL history. Things were respectable on the offensive side of things last year, with Moss playing a big role in the offense, and the result being 9th in the league in passing.

The problems started when Shell came onboard, bringing along Walsh, and his feuds with the players.

That said though, I think Shell will stay as coach of the Raiders next year..
