Pretty sure NFL refs don't make hundreds of thousands of dollars. They make something in the neighborhood of $50,000 to $70,000.
That was in 2001 before the referees went on strike. Now it's something closer to 60k-130k. When you're making that much for working 16-20 days a year, there's still plenty of money to find on the side (or rather, your full-time job).

Anyways, not really the point. I still don't think it's acceptable. If refs are seriously incapable of making those calls, then they need to be reviewable.

I agree with making them reviewable but I don't think you can truly fault the refs for the call on the field.

I saw the call and it probably cost the Lions the game. Now to fine Suh for something that shouldn't have been called in the first place? Ridiculous. It's pathetic that refs pretty much decided the outcome of two Lions-Bears games this year. You think they had money on the games or something.

The NFL is a joke. Okay, I can understand a couple missed calls on the field. Well, I still don't like it and I think the refs are doing a shitty job this year, but still. Things are moving fast, they don't always have a good angle, and they have to quickly make a judgment call. Whatever.

But it seems as though the NFL hands out fines based on whether the player was flagged or not. So even when replays show no wrongdoing, they still fine them. Ridiculous. They seem to be targeting Suh more than others. What a great way to slap down a really great rookie playing his heart out. We'll see if he turns bitter and lazy like Albert Haynesworth later in his career thanks to the NFL punishing him for playing hard.

At least they fined those Baltimore players who got away without flags on the Sunday night game.

I can see the call on the field, it could have looked pretty bad depending on the angle. Would have still been a bad call, but I can understand it. The fine, however, is absolute bullshit.

If Suh gets tired of being on the Lions and getting fucked by refs, send him to the Pats! :awe:

Sorry, but I'm not willing to give refs a pass on calls like these because "it looked bad live" or whatever. They're getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to make these calls. You don't make a call unless you are positive you saw a penalty occur. I don't see how anyone could be positive they saw a penalty occur when it never occurred. It's not acceptable.

The fine is on a whole new level of stupidity though, for sure.

live, and especially from that angle, it totally appears that Suh cocked his arm back to deliver a bona-fide punch to the neck. that's pretty hard to miss, if you ask me.

maybe.

the fine is retarded though, albeit, he did kinda hit him in the back of the head, and he should have been aiming lower

when I saw the hit on TV live, i was like WTF FLAG THAT

then in the replay, yeah he got some helmet but it was the hand not the forearm

you're talking crazy, now.

look at it from the video angle. motion of Suh plus reaction from Cutler looks like a serious punch.

you're blind if you can't see that.

replay, from different angle, tells an entirely different story. The call on the field makes sense to me. This shit happens. it has always happened. It will continue to happen. Different eras and different rules and different enforcement of such rules will not change how one sees something like this in the heat of the moment, on the field.

the fine--yes, that is complete BS when one has time to review these things and actually digest what happened.

Oh, unrelated--but reading your statement out of context is totally hilarious. "how is something that didn't happen pretty hard to miss??"

:hmm: really? hehe.

Yes, when I watched it live I thought it was a hard hit and was worried that they would flag it, because the NFL is a league of pussies now. Just because something is a hard hit doesn't mean it should be flagged.

Also, you'll notice on the replay that the official that was standing literally four feet from the tackle did not throw a flag or even reach for one.

Stop being an irrational homer. From the vantage point of the ref on the sideline, it definitely would have looked like a punch.

Seriously, the Lions still suck. The refs fucking them over is not the reason they're consistently still losing games.

To add insult to injury, they added a $15,000 fine after the fact - after review of the film. So something must have happened.

sigh...

the hit was:

1--in the back
2--to the QB's head.

this penalty has been around since before you were a diploid mass of cells.

get over it.

In the back? Since when is that in any way illegal? The quarterback was past the line of scrimmage and had lost his whimsical QB protection. This is not, and has not ever been, a penalty as defined by the rules of the NFL.

And just because I disagree with something doesn't mean I need to "get over" anything. I'm not over here crying about anything, like I really care if a guy with a $60M-whatever contract got fined $15k.

Maybe a different choice of words would have been better. So instead of saying it's "hard to miss," say it's "easy to misinterpret." Because it IS easy to misinterpret that particular hit. There is no excuse for the league to uphold the call though; it's obvious when viewed in slow motion from multiple angles that all Suh did was push Cutler over, nothing more.

QBs need to learn how to slide or suffer the consequences. If you're a QB and stay up, you deserve to be popped every bit as much as a fullback would.

On the same topic : who else thought the Ngata fine was stupid?

I can understand the call. At full speed, from the wrong angles, it absolutely looked illegal. I don't really fault Hochuli, since that's not a reviewable call. However - the fact that the NFL, with all their slow motion replays, still decided to fine him is absolutely absurd.

QB coddling needs to end.

Seriously though, can we fire Roger Goodell? He's the worst thing to happen to football in a very long time.

The NFL Is NOT Ndamukong Suh’s Daddy
But they are acting like it.

The NFL doesn’t like Suh’s attitude. And I can relate. This past weekend my 5-year old daughter was acting up. I told her if she doesn’t straighten up, she’s going to have to go to her room for 5 minutes. Her response, “I don’t care.” My natural instinct was … “ok fine… go to your room for the rest of the day.” That will learn her!
I don’t think it was the push that got him fined. I think it was his post game respone.
When asked if he was going to change the way he plays. Suh’s response?
“What for? There is no reason to. To be honest with you I don’t care. I’m just going to keep playing.”
He also added.
“I don’t care if it’s a penalty or not.”
“To be honest with you I don’t care. I’m just gonna keep playing.”
The NFL’s response. Go to your room.
Suh added on Wednesday: “I do intend to appeal it. I owe it to my coaches and teammates to play as hard as I can.”
