That was in 2001 before the referees went on strike. Now it's something closer to 60k-130k. When you're making that much for working 16-20 days a year, there's still plenty of money to find on the side (or rather, your full-time job).Pretty sure NFL refs don't make hundreds of thousands of dollars. They make something in the neighborhood of $50,000 to $70,000.
Anyways, not really the point. I still don't think it's acceptable. If refs are seriously incapable of making those calls, then they need to be reviewable.
