The argument began over ownership of a bottle of champagne, according to the police statement. Police said "pushing and shoving" over the bottle led to one of the off-duty officers being knocked to the ground, and while he was on the ground, he was "punched, kicked and stomped about his body and head multiple times by all four suspects."

Yeah, that sounds like the whole story...

Sp33, we're still waiting for that arrest. This case is actually troubling. I'm not sure where the desire to convict McCoy without all the facts is coming from. Also if the Police officers were off duty does it matter if they were police officers?

I'm at least proud the DA is pumping the breaks. I think more people should be disappointed in the police union's actions.

And it's pretty common knowledge that one thing worse than a cop is an off-duty cop that is eager to tell you about it.
I feel the same way about NFL running backs that have to tell everyone in the room that they have tons of money for playing 20 games a year or less.

I'm sorry ... but how and why is this important enough to discuss, even in OT?

It's now become important because of how the police are handling it. In a perfect world the Police would hand over the investigation to another agency since a fellow officer was involved... But in this world, not only did they do the investigation, they are recommending and pressuring the DA to file charges. I'm not sure what happened that night, but the process doesn't seem like it's in the best interest of justice.

Not charged yet, but more stuff has been going on in the background. Buffalo news stations are reporting that the Bills are moving forward with an expectation to be missing McCoy for at least the first few games of the season.

Now imagine if Shady Mccoy didn't have money.

According to witnesses, the brawl was allegedly started by Officer Roland Butler, who supposedly swiped a $350 bottle of pink champagne off McCoy's table. Then, when McCoy's friends protested, Officer Butler, at 6-foot-4 and at least 250-pounds, allegedly grabbed one of Shady's pals -- Tamarcus Porter, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound former Pitt running back -- by the neck and body-slammed him to the ground.

During the brawl, a witness saw one of the off-duty cops, Sgt. Daniel Ayres, reach for a black 9 mm pistol in a holster on his right hip. "Shady, he's a cop," the witness told McCoy.

The Philadelphia police commissioner has a directive that says off-duty cops aren't allowed to carry guns into bars. There's also the question of whether the other two off-duty cops were carrying guns in a club where cop patrons routinely aren't frisked.

The officers again broke protocol when they didn't call 911 after the fight, which is what they're supposed to do when they're involved in an off-duty incident.

Instead, Officer Butler fled the scene on his way to seeking treatment at Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Upper Darby, where he was treated for a laceration to his right eye, a broken nose, broken ribs and a sprained thumb.

The only thing "shady" in that is the off duty officers. I think they are in for some trouble.

Yeah McCoy won't be charged, looks like he's off the hook since the officers started it. The NFL will investigate as well.
Although McCoy reportedly won't be charged, the NFL will conduct its own investigation into the incident and still could discipline the Buffalo Bills' running back.

Picking a fight with football players isn't the smartest thing to do. They are trained to be explosive and break through huge guys with pads on; if they kick/punch you your bones will break like what happened to these officers.

According to the article, nobody's being charged. Doesn't even appear to indicate that there is any internal punishment being contemplated for the police involved. Seems like a cop-out to me.

It's sad that there are two types of justice in this country. Those for those with money and those without. McCoy is free because he has money and the ability to hire a good attorney to defend himself. The extremely sad thing is that he did nothing wrong. If this was an average Joe, he would have probably been locked up by now, because the system would have been stacked against him. The Cops here should be punished, but I won't hold my breath.

The NFL is one of the few organizations on earth with the money and media reach to hold the police accountable. If they want to make this a big thing, it will be a big thing. They probably won't though, given how often NFL players need to get some slack by law enforcement the NFL can't afford to get painted as anti-cop.

Quite a few police moonlight as bouncers / enforcers at clubs and it is ridiculous. They are generally over aggressive and able to get away with it because they are cops. When the cops are called, they just pull out their badge. When they get their asses kicked for picked a fight with an NFL player, they pull out the badge.

I don't recall anyone saying that any of the cops were working at the club in any capacity that night. Did I miss it?

I don't think these were, but I'm sure their actions were par for the course. They go in and act macho because anyone messes with them, they are cops.
