I just purchased a MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR motherboard to replace my Aging KG7-RAID, and i have a few questions. I have read that the Nforce2 nativly unlocks multpliers--i have an Athlon XP 1600+ (Palomino core with a good stepping -- haven't seen the CPU in over a year--forget what it is at the moment), will the Nforce 2 unlock the CPU for me or will I have to do it manually before i place it into the board?

Also, i have 2x256 of Crucial PC2100 (I haven't had many problems running it at 155mhz+--i believe i can't get higher cuz of my PCI bus being overclocked), woudl i be able to drop a "barton" 333mhz FSB processor in here and still run my memory at 266mhz (or slightly overclocked, but not quite 333?)

THanks,
Hess

nForce doesn't 'unlock' processors. TBred and Barton ship unlocked. nForce boards (usually) have the ability to control all five multiplier bits, most boards only can control the bottom four.

The nForce won't do anything for a chip that doesn't have all the L1s connected.

for the barton, the memory would have to run at 166 which is asking a lot from pc2100

without going into terminology and much detail, when you drop a barton into a nforce board, you can access a wide range of multiplers. NF7-s doe 5x-22x i think

TerryMathews has the correct answer,IF your cpu is unlocked then you can adjust the multipliers,BUT if you cpu is locked (L1 bridges cut) then you cant adjust the multipliers.

If your cpu is locked you'll have to fill in the L1's & unlock your cpu.

Yes, from personal experience with the same cpu (1600+) and an A7N8X Deluxe, the multiplier can't be changed without messing with your chip. Well, let me rephrase that -- I thought I was all cool doing my first overclock, bumping up the multiplier to 11 (instead of 10.5, wow!). However, WCPUID shows that the chip doesn't pay attention to it and kept it's own native 10.5, thank-you-very-much.
