nForce 5 series chipset cooling...

I'm looking to get an aftermarket NB cooler for the nForce 570 Ultra chipset on my MSI K9N Platinum, as I've read many reviews about the grossly inadequate passive NB cooling that comes stock with the board. Will NB coolers for the nForce 4 series (such as the Thermalright HR-05) fit on the 5XX series chipsets? If not, then are there any good, quiet cooling solutions for these hot-running chipsets?

Edit;

The nForce 570 Ultra chipset on my board; there is a thermal pad next to it and the long, passive heatsink also covers this. Will a regular heatsink for nForce 4 fit this given that it has holes on diagonal ends of the chipset itself?

Ok, so since my CPU arrives tomorrow (newegg messed up, had to RMA), I made a temporary duct to cool the chipset

Ghetto solution for chipset cooling

So, any suggestions or confirmation that good NF4 coolers will fit? I'm looking at the Evercool VC-RE currently.

If you can use your 7600GT on the bottom slot, then it is possible to use the HR-05. At least I would think.

My mobo is not SLi, second X16 type slot is X1...uless someone wants to tell me how to hack this mobo to be SLi like the DFI Ultra-Ds?

Will coolers for the nForce 4 chipsets fit on the nForce 570 chipset? I have holes on diagonal ends of the mobo next to the chipset if I take off the long stock chipset cooler

here is a picture of the chipset with the long heatsink taken off

OK fixed link I think...morning bump

Also check the OP to see my temporary solution for cooling the chipset until I can get confirmation that a good NF4 chipset cooler (such as Evercool VC-RE) will fit

Passive cooling is going to run hotter then active solutions but that doesn?t mean it's running too hot. If you don't intend on overclocking I think it should be fine; that?s a decently sized heatsink. Give it a shot at least.

Personally I think any type of passive cooling on the nforce4/5 chipset is stupid. I use a Swiftech MCX159-R on my Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe and I think it's why my computer has been rock stable in 100F heat when other computers start flaking in my house. Swiftech doesn't make the MCX159-R anymore but they do sell an updated version called the MCX159-CU. It's worth every penny.

Inadequate passive cooling is stupid, adequate or better passive cooling is smarter not stupid. That is unless you?re going for an aggressive overclock.

I'm going for 2.6 GHz or more on my 3500+, so I don't think that heatpipe-less passive heatsink will do...

996GT2 already stated that his second big PCI-e slot is actually X1 so it can't be used.

Ah, he has the nonSLI mobo, missed that part. I've got the SLI version, K9N SLI Platinum, so I should be able to run my video card in the second PCIe slot.

It can be "pointed" in any direction. Just choose one where a video card isn't. The part that actually goes over the chipset is small and low, while the fins and fan are offset at whatever angle you want. Look for some reviews to see what others have done with it. Mine can point in the direction of my 7900GT and clear off of teh side of the board, or go in other directions and clear as well, though it can then cover up other things, like a SATA slot.

$34 for a chipset cooler? That's more than my Freezer 64 Pro!

I would like to try to get an Evercool VC-RE to fit, anyone have any comments on that?

I used the passive Zalman for a while on an Ultrea D. It fits if you use the bottom slot, but not if you use the 16x slot or do the SLI mod. In any case, if you OC, it just is not enough cooler.

My brief experience with the JingTing makes me think it will fit anything. Unfortunately, the board needs to be RMA'd, so I don't yet know how well it cools.

I just got one and the cooler part was bent back over the heat sink therefore no offset. The pipe is collapsed. Is this the way they all come? Am I supposed to bend it to where I want or is it defective?

I want to be sure I understand this. When you bolt the heat sink to the chipset, are the fins and fan located straight above the hrat sink, no matter which way you turn it? If that is the case, then something is wrong.
